Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation

[1][2]PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH

DESCRIPTION

The [1][2]park/neutral position switch (Fig. 130) is threaded into the side of the transmission case, just above the transmission oil pan mounting surface. The center terminal of the park/neutral position switch is the starter-circuit terminal. It provides the ground for the starter solenoid circuit through the selector lever in PARK and NEUTRAL positions only The outer terminals on the switch are for the backup lamp circuit.

OPERATION
The [1][2]park/neutral position switch is operated by the manual lever of the valve body. When the valve body is in the PARK or NEUTRAL positions, the center terminal of the park/neutral position switch is grounded to the transmission case through the manual lever.

When the valve body is in the REVERSE position, the manual lever depresses the [1][2]park/neutral position switch and connects the outer two terminals of the switch to provide continuity for the back-up lamp circuit.
