NUMBER: 18-040-03GROUP: Vehicle Performance
DATE: November 21, 2003
THIS BULLETIN IS BEING PROVIDED IN ADVANCE. THE SOFTWARE WILL BE AVAILABLE ON ISIS CD2147 ON OR AFTER JANUARY 07, 2004.
SUBJECT:
Erroneous DTC P0135 - 1/1 Oxygen Sensor Heater Failure
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
MODELS:
2004 (WG) Grand Cherokee (International Market)
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 4.0L engine (sales code ERH), and built prior to October 16, 2003 (MDH 1016XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience a MIL illumination. Further diagnosis may determine that the MIL was caused by Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0135 - 1/1 Oxygen Sensor Heater Failure. This condition may be intermittent and may be dependent upon driving habits and/or ambient temperatures. Colder temperatures may cause this condition to occur more frequently. This condition may occur more frequently if the vehicle engine is started and allowed to warm up without driving the vehicle.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using a Scan Tool (DRBIII(R) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures Manual, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed. If DTCs are present record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.
If the customer describes the Symptom/Condition, perform the Repair Procedure.

NOTE:
An updated J1962 cable has been released. This cable has a red colored connector at the DRBIII(R) connection. Use this cable whenever a flash is being performed.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Connect a battery charger and set as close to 14 volts charge as possible.
2. Using the DRBIII(R), obtain and record the current PCM part number.
3. Use the null modem cable to connect the DRBIII(R) to the computer with the Benchtop Programmer/DRBIII(R) Winflash II application. The DRBIII(R) must be at version level 57.0 or higher.
4. Remove any PCMCIA card from the DRBIII(R).
5. From the DRBIII(R) Main Menu, select Run Memory Card Program (Option 5), and then select Attempt Serial Communications (Option 1). Take no action when the DRBIII(R) screen displays the following messages: No Memory Card Detected, Attempting Serial Communications Link, Press Page Back To Exit.
6. Using ISIS CD 2147 (January 2004), reinstall or upgrade the existing Benchtop Programmer/DRBIII(R) Winflash II application on the computer. The Installation and User's guides are located on the ISIS CD under the Software Help folder for additional assistance.
7. Launch the computer Benchtop Programmer/DRBIII(R) Winflash II application.
8. Click on the computer Mode menu and select DRBIII(R) Winflash. The DRBIII(R) Winflash application should display the following words in green, DRB Connected.

a. Select 2004 Model Year.
b. Select WG Body Style.
c. Select 4.0L Engine.
NOTE:
The preferred method to select the correct software is by entering the current PCM part number into the ISIS Benchtop Programmer/DRBIII(R) Winflash II application.
10. Select the desired PCM Flash update from the table grid list on the computer.
11. Click the CD Download button on the computer to send the file to the DRBIII(R)
12. Connect the DRBIII(R) to the vehicle and select Vehicle Flash (Option 7) from the DRBIII(R) Main Menu.
13. Carefully follow the instructions on the DRBIII(R) screen and complete the PCM reprogramming process. Power down the PCM by turning the ignition switch to the OFF position, and disconnect the DRBIII(R) from the vehicle.
14. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Software Update Label" p/n 05011058AA. Attach the label to the PCM and cover the label with the clear plastic overlay (Fig. 1).
