Keyless Entry - Can't Enter Vehicle Using Passive Entry

TO VERIFY THAT THIS SERVICE ACTION IS APPLICABLE TO THE UN-SOLD VEHICLE, USE VIP OR PERFORM A VIN SEARCH IN TECHCONNECT. APPLICATION OF THIS SERVICE BULLETIN TO SOLD UNITS IS BASED UPON THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCING THE SYMPTOM/CONDITIONS. ALL REPAIRS ARE REIMBURSABLE WITHIN THE PROVISIONS OF WARRANTY.

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SERVICE BULLETIN 08-023-10, DATED SEPT 9, 2010, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THIS IS A COMPLETE REVISION AND NO ASTERISKS HAVE BEEN USED TO HIGHLIGHT REVISIONS.

HELP USING THE wiTECH DIAGNOSTIC APPLICATION FOR FLASHING AN ECU IS AVAILABLE BY SELECTING "HELP" THEN "HELP CONTENTS" AT THE TOP OF THE wiTECH DIAGNOSTIC APPLICATION WINDOW.

THE wiTECH SOFTWARE LEVEL MUST BE AT RELEASE 11.01 OR HIGHER TO PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE.

SUBJECT:
PEM Module Test And Replace Or Test And Flash

OVERVIEW:
This Bulletin involves testing and replacing if failure occurs for the PEM Module (Passive Entry Module) or Flash the PEM if it passes the test for Proximity Issues.

MODELS:

2011 (WK) Grand Cherokee

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built prior to 7-29-2010

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The customers may experience not being able to enter the vehicle with the Passive Entry system

DIAGNOSIS:

1. Check and make sure the IOD fuse is present and the vehicle windows are rolled down.





2. Check that passive entry works (locking and unlocking of vehicle is possible by touching door handle lock/unlock switch when a learned Fobik is with the user).

3. Read DTCs. Make sure that none of the DTC's below are set ACTIVE.

a. B1A71 - 01 (Passive Entry Antenna 1 - General Electrical Failure)

b. B1A72 - 01 (Passive Entry Antenna 2 - General Electrical Failure)

c. B1A73 - 01 (Passive Entry Antenna 3 - General Electrical Failure)

d. B1A74 - 01 (Passive Entry Antenna 4 - General Electrical Failure)

4. Clear all DTC codes in the PEM module.

5. Place all learned Fobiks inside the vehicle and close door.

6. Attempt vehicle lock by pressing the lock switch on the door handle on the driver door. (note that nothing should happen as the keys are inside the vehicle).

7. Wait 2 seconds.

8. Repeat step no.6 & 7 ten times.

9. Move to passenger door handle.

10. Attempt vehicle lock by pressing the lock switch on the door handle on the passenger door. (note that nothing should happen as the keys are inside the vehicle).

11. Wait 2 seconds.

12. Repeat step no.10 & 11 ten times.

13. Move to the rear hatch of vehicle.

14. Attempt vehicle lock by pressing the lock switch on the liftgate. (note that nothing should happen as the keys are inside the vehicle).

15. Wait 2 seconds.

16. Repeat step no.15 & 16 ten times.

17. Place all working fobiks outside the vehicle.

18. Test operator should sit in the vehicle with door closed.

19. Press start/stop button. Cluster should display key not found in the cluster. (Use the start/stop button rather than your finger. If you use your finger, you may get a "key damaged" message.)

20. Wait 2 seconds.

21. Repeat step 19 & 20 ten times.

22. Test operator should obtain a learned fobik and keep this on their person and verify passive entry function by locking and unlocking the driver door.

23. Test operator should obtain a learned fobik and keep this on their person and verify keyless go function by advancing the ignition position in the vehicle.

24. Read DTCs. Make sure the none of the DTC's below are set ACTIVE

a. B1A71 - 01 (Passive Entry Antenna 1 - General Electrical Failure)

b. B1A72 - 01 (Passive Entry Antenna 2 - General Electrical Failure)

c. B1A73 - 01 (Passive Entry Antenna 3 - General Electrical Failure)

d. B1A74 - 01 (Passive Entry Antenna 4 - General Electrical Failure)

25. Are any of the above DTC's set ACTIVE in the Passive Entry Module (PEM).

a. YES >>> Follow REPAIR PROCEDURE REPLACE below.

b. NO >>> Follow REPAIR PROCEDURE FLASH below.

PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE REPLACE:

1. Replace PEM Module as per the directions on tech connect 08 - Electrical > 8E - Electronic Control Modules > Module, Passive Entry > Removal - Removal.

2. Replace PEM Module

3. Install as per the directions on tech connect 08 - Electrical> 8E - Electronic Control Modules > Module, Passive Entry > Installation - Installation.

4. Perform StarSCAN diagnostics, clear any stored codes.

5. Return vehicle to customer.

REPAIR PROCEDURE FLASH:

NOTE:
When flashing the PEM on this vehicle it is critical that static battery voltage and battery condition is taken in consideration. If the battery is in a low state of charge it should be charged with the appropriate battery charger first before attempting to flash the PEM.

1. Using the wiTECH Diagnostic Application for flashing a PEM is made available through the wiTECH Diagnostic Application. For instructions select the "HELP" tab on upper portion of the wiTECH window, then "HELP CONTENTS." This will open the Welcome to wiTECH Help screen were help topics can now selected.

2. Clear any DTC's that may have been set in other modules due to reprogramming. The wiTECH application will automatically present all DTCs after the flash and allow the tech to clear them.

3. Return vehicle to customer.
