Flywheel: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Required:
- Ring Gear Brake

NOTICE: Flywheel is heavy and if not supported will fall from vehicle when all the mounting bolts are removed.

With ring gear brake in place, remove eight flywheel bolts.

INSPECTION

1. Examine for surface cracks, scoring, or discoloration of the clutch contact surface. Minor surface marring can be repaired with emery paper. Otherwise, flywheel must be machine resurfaced or replaced.

2. Examine for damaged or worn ring gear teeth. If necessary, replace ring gear as follows:
a. Grind almost through ring gear, then cut through remaining material with chisel.
b. Heat the new ring gear to 480-570° F (250300° C), then fit onto the room temperature flywheel. The beveled side of the ring gear must face toward the engine side.
3. Inspect for runout as follows:

a. With flywheel attached to engine, mount dial indicator with gauge plunger touching flywheel clutch contact surface. Turn engine by hand and record maximum reading.

Runout maximum: 0.008 inch (0.2 mm)

b. If the runout exceeds specification, repair by resurfacing (grinding).

Maximum resurfacing depth: 0.020 inch (0.5 mm)

2. Insert and hand tighten eight bolts.
3. Install ring gear brake.
