Air Bag System - Undeployed Air Bags and Tensioners

Model: All Model

Group: Restraints(81)

Number: KT2007051501

Area: N. America

Subject
Undeployed Airbag/Pre-tensioner Demonstration
(General - 016)

- Description

In the event that you replace an undeployed airbag or pre-tensioner, you may use such parts during training of dealer personnel regarding the functioning of those items. KMA recommends dealers to periodically demonstrate airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner deployment as part of a dealer training program on how the airbag system operates and the consequences of deployment.

The airbags should be deployed for educational or any other valid purposes as described below.

Additional airbag related information can be found in the following TSBs:

^ Gen 015 (General Information) dated November 2006.

^ Bod 005 (Body) dated May 1995.

and also in the applicable Kia Service Manuals.

Air bag related MSDS sheets can be found on the Service Or Parts page of Kdealer.net, by selecting "Parts Tech" from the menu on the left side of the page.

Airbags or pre-tensioners should not be considered as salvageable parts and should never be installed in another vehicle.

HANDLING AND DISPOSAL OF DAMAGED OR PARTIALLY DEPLOYED AIRBAGS

Damaged or partially deployed airbags should be treated as an undeployed airbag and deployed pursuant to the instructions in this bulletin.

How to determine if airbags are partially deployed:

Remove airbag module from vehicle. Follow any applicable instructions in Service Manual. Inspect module to determine if there is a single (2-pin) or dual (4-pin) connector receptacle or two connectors. Multiple connectors or multi-pin receptacles typically indicate multiple igniters which are found in more recent multi-stage airbag systems.

If the module is deployed and there is one (single, 2-pin) connector, the airbag cannot deploy a second time, and it is inert/deployed/expended.

*NOTICE
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DEPLOY ANY AIRBAG WHILE STILL INSTALLED IN A VEHICLE. SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE WILL RESULT.

^ Next, connect the adapter between the A/B and the deployment tool harness connector.

^ Place the deployment tool at least thirty feet (10 meters) away
from the airbag.

^ Connect a 12 volt battery to the tool.

Once an intact airbag has been removed from a vehicle, or has been found defective or damaged during transit, storage or service, it should be deployed as shown below, after the proper SST (Special Service Tool) adapters have been selected:

DEPLOYING AIRBAGS

Deployment tool K95U-6000-BDY is required for any deployment, along with one or more of the adapters listed under "SRS Deployment Adapter Cross Reference" in the Tool & Equipment section of KGIS.

(Current Models listed only; consult Service Manual for previous model information)

Before demonstrating any airbag-, side airbag or pre-tensioner deployments, the manager in charge must give approval and ensure that safety instructions are provided to participants and audience.

^ Confirm that the deployment tool is functioning properly, harness and adapters are operational and not damaged.

^ For curtain airbags: using scissors or pliers, cut the attaching straps and remove any mounting brackets, etc. from the bag to be deployed, to prevent them from separating during deployment.

^ Position the airbag face up, outdoors on flat ground at least thirty
feet (10 meters) from any obstacles or people.

^ From KGIS Tool & Equipment Section, select the proper vehicle model table, then select the correct SST adapter.

WARNING
ENSURE DEPLOYMENT TOOL HARNESS CONNECTION IS NOT CONNECTED TO A BATTERY OR POWER SOURCE.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN SEVERE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.

^ Next, connect the adapter between the A/B and the deployment tool harness connector.

^ Place the deployment tool at least thirty feet (10 meters) away
from the airbag.

^ Connect a 12 volt battery to the tool.

WARNING
THE OUT-OF-VEHICLE DEPLOYMENT PROCEDURE SHOULD BE PERFORMED IN AN OPEN AREA AWAY FROM OTHER PERSONNEL. VERIFY THAT THERE IS NO LOOSE DEBRIS AROUND THE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY. ENSURE NO FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS ARE PRESENT. ALL PERSONNEL SHOULD BE BEHIND PROTECTIVE COVER (I.E., WALL, VEHICLE, ETC.) TO SHIELD THEIR BODIES FROM ANY POTENTIAL PROJECTILES. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN SEVERE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.

Wear gloves and safety glasses.

^ Push the tool's deployment switches. The airbag should deploy (deployment is both highly audible and visible: a loud noise and rapid inflation of the bag, followed by slow deflation).

Allow airbag components to cool down before handling.

WARNING
AIR BAG MODULE COMPONENTS ARE VERY HOT AFTER DEPLOYMENT. UNITS SHOULD BE DEPLOYED IN AN OPEN AREA TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL FIRES. ALLOW INFLATORS AND MODULES TO THOROUGHLY COOL AT LEAST 20 MINUTES AFTER DEPLOYMENT. COOLING AIR BAG MODULES SHOULD BE CONTINUOUSLY MONITORED TO ENSURE THE HEAT GENERATED DOES NOT CREATE A FIRE WITH SPILLED LIQUIDS OR OTHER DEBRIS. FAILURE TO ALLOW DEPLOYED UNIT TO PROPER COOL COULD RESULT IN BURNS OR FIRES OR PERSONAL INJURY.

Only after the airbags, side airbags or pre-tensioners have been
deployed can they be discarded. Dispose of the complete airbag.
No part of it can be reused. Place it in a sturdy plastic bag and seal
it securely.

In Case Airbags Cannot Be Deployed:

An undeployed airbag contains an inflator which must be treated
as a hazardous waste product and disposed of accordingly.

Undeployed airbags may not simply be added to trash or taken to
a dump because of the risk of inadvertent deployment and injury to
vehicle dismantlers, recyclers or waste disposal personnel.

If you are unable to deploy the airbag or pre-tensioner, first create
a short circuit by connecting together the two airbag inflator terminals or wires.

Package the airbag in exactly the same packing that the new replacement part comes in.

Dispose of in accordance with applicable local, State and Federal regulations. Recycling is recommended. Due to variations in local laws and regulations, as well as in the identification of local hazardous waste disposal facilities, it is important that you consult with a hazardous waste disposal expert or legal counsel.
