SUBJECT:
2005 SPORTAGE EQUIPPED WITH FOG LIGHTS - CIRCUIT MODIFICATION
This bulletin provides information relating to a change in the 2005 Sportage factory fog light circuit operation. Sportages produced from 10/28/04 2/17/05 were wired to allow fog lamp operation in combination with the hi-beams.
With the information in this bulletin, Kia is providing a repair procedure to re-wire the headlamp hi-beam circuit to comply with local laws in several U.S. states.
Note:
For customer satisfaction, please repair wiring on all affected models prior to sale and delivery within the production range.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Inspect fog lamp operation, switch the hi-beams ON, verify the fog lamps are NOT ON with the hi-beams. If the fog lamps are ON, proceed as follows:
2. Remove the lower steering column cover, as shown. Pivot steering column to ease removal.
3. Disconnect the M25-1 Electrical Connector from the left side of the combination switch.
4. Peel back the foam insulation approximately 3 inches.
5. Locate Pin Number 13 (white wire), cut this wire 2 inches from the electrical connector. Fold back and tape the harness side of the white wire to the harness, as shown.
6. Carefully install a 3M Scotch-lok(TM) 558 Electrical Insulation Displacement (EID) Connector over the wire of Pin Number 10 (blue wire, corner location at bottom of connector). Install the white cut wire into the other open cavity of the 3M Scotch-lok(TM) 588 EID Connector.
7. Use pliers to crimp the double spade terminal into the wires, then close and clip the connector shell.
8. Re-install the foam insulation over the wire harness; tape in place, as necessary.
9. Connect the electrical Connector M25-1 to the turn signal switch.
10. Verify proper headlamp operation; confirm the fog lights turn OFF when the hi-beams are activated.
11. Install the lower steering column cover, as shown. Clean residual fingerprints marks from steering column cover.
