Campaign - Engine Cold Start Improvements

17/3/95

H855

SUBJECT:
Cold Start - Service Action H855

MODEL:
Range Rover, Discovery, Defender

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
Selected vehicles as defined by Model Year and vehicle location map.

DETAIL

We have developed improved fueling tunes to enhance starting performance in extreme cold. These tunes reduce the amount of fuel injected into the engine at temperatures below -50 (-20° C). 1995 MY Range Rover Classics, '94 and '95 MY Discoverys, and '95 MY Defender 90's that are located in the shaded areas on the map included with this bulletin are included in this Service Action.

In addition to the updated tune, engineering have also identified that a high level of cranking speed is critical to starting. As a result an oil change to 5W/30 or 5W/40 engine oil is required (unless the vehicle recently had an oil change at PDI in line with TIB # 12/07/94/US).

The vehicle owners will be sent an advisory requesting them to make an appointment with their dealer to have the work completed. Refer to Service Bulletin G95-010.

Note:
Before the action below is carried out ensure that the battery/charging system is in good condition and the vehicles ignition system is functioning correctly.

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint, follow the procedure below.

Complete a Service Action Label. Clean an area on the hood locking panel just above the vehicle's emissions label (or another location close to this label). Firmly stick the Service Action label to the panel, and then cover with the clear plastic film as supplied. (see illustrations)

Remove sump plug and allow oil to drain. Refit plug and refill. DO NOT REPLACE OIL FILTER.
