Remote Audio System Switches

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

RANGE ROVER (LP) Up to 1998 MY (VIN to be determined)

SITUATION;

REMOTE AUDIO SYSTEM SWITCHES NOT FUNCTIONING

The remote steering wheel mounted Audio System switches on some Range Rovers may not work properly (e.g. volume increases when the volume decrease switch is pressed).

RESOLUTION:

REPLACE AUDIO SYSTEM SWITCHES

A new style Audio System switch assembly has been introduced. This new style switch incorporates microswitches instead of carbon switches for improved operational feel and better durability. In order to resolve the customer complaints, the audio system remote switches should be replaced if there is evidence of the switches working improperly.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

REMOVAL OF AUDIO SYSTEM SWITCHES

WARNING:
Before removing air bag. read and follow all warnings and cautions relating to air bag module removal found in the Workshop Manual.





1. Remove driver's side airbag module following directions found in the WSM section 75.

2. Disconnect steering wheel switch multiplug.

3. Remove two screws securing multiplug to horn unit.

CAUTION:
The three screws securing the printed circuit to horn unit are not replaceable. If damaged during removal, a new steering wheel must be installed. Do not attempt to use any other fasteners.

4. Remove three screws holding printed circuit to horn unit.

5. Lift two clips securing each switch pack.

6. Remove switch packs and printed circuit assembly.

INSTALLATION OF AUDIO SYSTEM SWITCHES

1. Position the new switch pack on steering wheel.

CAUTION:
Take care to avoid damage to the Audio System switch printed circuit when tightening screws: It is vital for a proper repair to avoid damaging the printed circuit or stripping the screws.

2. Apply Loctite(R) 242 to screws and fasten printed circuit to steering wheel.

3. Ensure that all connections for the airbag, rotary coupler and Audio System switch are properly connected.

4. Install driver's side airbag following directions in WSM section 86.
