REPAIR PROCEDURE:

REPLACE STEERING GEAR PINION SEAL

1. Refer to Workshop Manual section 211-02: Power Steering > Removal and Installation > Steering Gear to remove the steering gear.

CAUTION:
Do not over-tighten vice or damage feed pipes.

2. Using soft-face jaws, secure steering gear in vice with pinion located vertically.

4. Clean the cavity, housing and pinion of any excess grease.

CAUTION:
Do not damage pinion and pinion housing.

5. With a protective card against the pinion and the removed white dust cover to protect the pinion housing, use a suitable lever to remove and discard the black dust excluder from the pinion housing. (Figure 2)

6. Using suitable internal pliers remove and set aside the circlip. (Figure 3)

7. Clean pin ion, housing and cavity of excess grease. (Figure 4)

NOTE:
If any gouge or scratch damage has occurred, a new steering gear must be installed.

8. Verify no damage has occurred to the pinion and housing.

9. Place clean adhesive tape around the pinion:

Starting at the lower pinion chamfer, wind the tape upwards to cover the pinion completely. (Figure 5)

10. Install by hand the new hydraulic top seal over the pinion.

11. Slide the new hydraulic top seal down the pinion. (Figure 6)

12. Using special tool LRT37-014 (303-518), fully install the new hydraulic top seal: (Figure 7)
