Camshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair

NOTE: The cam position and engine speed sensors are not serviceable as individual units. If found to be defective, the distributor must be replaced.

Air Cleaner And Hose:

Removal
- Remove air cleaner cover, air flow meter and air hose as a unit.
- Disconnect ignition wires from distributor cap.
- Disconnect distributor electrical connector.

Distributor Hold-down Bolts:

- Remove distributor hold-down bolts and slide unit from cylinder head.

Distributor Installation:

Installation
- Replace distributor o-ring and lubricate with engine oil.
- Rotate engine to TDC and check alignment of camshaft. If incorrect, rotate engine an additional 360°.

Distributor Installation:

- Align mark on distributor shaft with mark on housing.

Distributor Installation:

- Insert distributor into cylinder head with line on housing matching line on bearing cap.
- Lightly tighten hold-down bolts.

Igntion Wire Connection:

- Reconnect ignition wires.
- Reconnect electrical connection.
- Reinstall air cleaner cover assembly.
- Start engine and set ignition timing. Refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES in IGNITION SYSTEM.
