Engine: Service and Repair

On models with air bag system, disarm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.

1. Obtain audio anti-theft code, if equipped, as outlined in Technician Safety Information. Remove battery and battery tray.
2. Drain engine coolant and engine oil.
3. Scribe hood hinge locations, then remove hood.
4. Remove radiator grille.
5. Remove fan with fluid coupling, water pump pulley and fan shroud.
6. Remove drive belts.
7. Disconnect radiator hoses and remove radiator.
8. Disconnect volume airflow meter connector and wire clamp.
9. Loosen No. 2 air hose clamp and disconnect hose.
10. Remove air cleaner cap, resonator and volume airflow meter.
11. Remove air filter and air cleaner case.
12. Disconnect cruise control actuator and accelerator cables from throttle body.
13. Disconnect heater hoses.
14. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose, EVAP hose and fuel hoses.
15. Disconnect engine wires and connectors.
16. Disconnect A/C compressor and bracket, if equipped. Place compressor aside and suspend it.
17. Disconnect No. 2 radiator hose from water inlet, then remove radiator pipe.
18. Disconnect power steering pressure hose and return hose.
19. Remove heater valve, then disconnect ground strap and engine wire from cowl panel.
20. Remove glove compartment door.
21. Remove ECM retaining screws and disconnect ECM. Disconnect ECM connectors.
22. Disconnect cowl wire connectors, then pull engine wire from cabin.
23. Remove stabilizer bar.
24. Remove front and rear propeller shafts. Put alignment marks on flanges.
25. Remove transmission control rod from shift lever.
26. Remove Shift lever knob, console and boot, then remove console box.
27. Disconnect shift lever connectors, then remove transmission shift lever assembly.
28. Pull out shift rod pin and disconnect shift rod.
29. Remove hose clamp and transfer shift lever.
30. Remove front exhaust pipe assembly.
31. Disconnect ground strap from heat insulator.
32. Remove transfer under cover.
33. Place jack under transmission, then remove frame crossmember.
34. Slowly lift engine with transmission from vehicle. Ensure all cables, hoses and electrical connectors are disconnected during removal.
35. Separate transmission from engine.
36. Reverse procedure to install. Refer to Specifications for torque values. Reset audio coded anti-theft system, if equipped, as outlined under Technician Safety Information. On models with air bag system, rearm airbag system as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
