Roof Rack - Rattle Noise

Introduction
To help reduce the possibility of a rattle noise from the roof rack, stainless steel washers must be added to the front cross bar screws, and the front cross bar must be repositioned as described in this bulletin.





Applicable Vehicles

The Stainless steel washers must also be added under the following conditions:

^ When installing a DIO Roof Rack on a '99 or '00 MY LX 470.
^ When the front cross bar requires replacement on '99 or '00 MY LX 470.

Warranty Information

Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Lexus Basic Warranty. This warranty is in effect for
48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customers specific complaint.

Repair Procedure





1. Using a nylon trim removal tool remove the plastic cover from the end support on the driver side. See Figure 1.





2. Using a T-40 Torx screwdriver remove the 2 screws attaching the driver side end support to the vehicle roof. See Figure 2.





3. While raising the cross bar to access the two T-25 Torx screws on the underside as indicated in Figure 3, remove the two shoulder screws from the driver side of the front cross bar assembly.

^ Do not raise roof rack assembly more than 2 inches.





4. After adding stainless steel washers as shown in Fig. 4, reinstall the shoulder screws (Figure 3) and tighten until snug.

^ These shoulder screws must be finger started.

^ Prior to tightening the shoulder screws ensure that the front cross bar is in the most forward position.

5. Reinstall the roof rack assembly.





6. After applying body sealant on the threads the T-40 screws must be installed, as shown in Fig. 5, and tightened to 65 lb.in.





7. Prior to the completion of the roof rack installation, the cross bar must be positioned as follows:

^ The front cross bar must be forced 7-1/4" rearward as shown in Figure and the thumb-wheel tightened.
