Shift Cable: Service and Repair

TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY

REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSEMBLY
a. w/ Engine under cover assembly: Remove the engine under cover assembly.
3. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.1
4. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.2
a. w/ Engine under cover No.2: Remove the engine under cover No.2.
5. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB ASSEMBLY W/ PASSENGER AIR BAG ASSEMBLY
6. REMOVE AIR CONDITIONER UNIT ASSEMBLY
7. REMOVE CENTER AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY





8. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the nut from the control shaft lever.
b. Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the control shaft lever.





c. Remove the clip and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the control cable bracket.





d. Remove the bolt and transmission control cable bracket No.2.





e. Remove the 3 bolts and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the vehicle.





f. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the cable end from the shift lever assembly.
g. Turn the socket of the transmission control cable assembly counterclockwise and remove the stopper cap.
h. Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the shift lever assembly.

ADJUSTMENT
1. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
a. When shifting from the P to R position only with the ignition switch on and brake pedal depressed, make sure that the shift lever moves smoothly and can be moderately operated.
b. Start the engine and make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting from the N to D position and moves rearward when shifting to the R position.





2. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
a. Loosen the nut on the control shaft lever.





b. Push the control shaft fully downward.
c. Return the control shaft lever 2 notches to the N position.





d. While pushing the control cable end up with the shift lever in the N position, install it to the control shaft lever with the nut.
Torque: 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE:
^ If the control cable end is excessively pushed up, the shift lever can not be adjusted.
^ When tightening the nut, confirm that the control cable is properly stretched.

e. Start the engine and make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting the lever from the N to D position and moves rearward when shifting it to the R position.

INSTALLATION





1. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Connect the socket of the transmission control cable assembly to the shift lever assembly
b. Connect the control cable end to the shift lever assembly.
c. Push the stopper cap to the socket as shown in the illustration.
d. Turn the socket of the transmission control cable assembly clockwise and install the stopper cap.

NOTICE:
^ To prevent torsion of the inner cable, the end with the eye should face up.
^ Push the cable end to the bottom of the pin.
^ Confirm that the connection between the socket and the shift lock control unit is fixed.





e. Install the transmission control cable assembly with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 4.9 Nm (50 kgf-cm, 43 inch lbs.)





f. Install the transmission control cable bracket No.2 with the bolt.
Torque: 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)





g. Temporarily install the transmission control cable assembly to the control shaft lever with the nut.





h. Connect the transmission control cable assembly with a new clip to the bracket.
2. INSTALL CENTER AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY
3. INSTALL AIR CONDITIONER UNIT ASSEMBLY
4. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB ASSEMBLY W/ PASSENGER AIR BAG ASSEMBLY
5. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
6. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.2
a. w/ Engine under cover No.2: Install the engine under cover No.2.
7. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.1
8. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSEMBLY
a. w/ Engine under cover assembly: Install the engine under cover assembly
9. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
10. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
11. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
