Rear Axle Hub

REAR AXLE HUB

COMPONENTS:




COMPONENTS:





ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. REMOVE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
3. REMOVE REAR DISC





4. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS
a. Using a dial indicator, check for looseness near the center of the axle hub.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set at right angles to the measurement surface. If looseness exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub assembly.





5. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB RUNOUT
a. Using a dial indicator, check for runout on surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set at right angles to the measurement surface. If runout exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub assembly.

6. INSTALL REAR DISC
7. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
8. INSTALL REAR WHEEL

REMOVAL
1. REMOVE REAR TIRE
2. SEPARATE LOAD SENSING VALVE SENSOR BRACKET





3. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT
a. Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the axle shaft nut.
SST 09930-00010

NOTICE: Release the staked part of the nut completely, otherwise the screw of the drive shaft may be damaged.

b. While applying the brakes, remove the rear axle shaft nut.

4. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
5. REMOVE REAR DISC
6. SEPARATE SPEED SENSOR REAR
7. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING NO. 2
8. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING NO. 1
9. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
10. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY NO. 1
11. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY NO. 2
12. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER





13. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE ANCHOR BLOCK
a. Remove the 2 nuts and the parking brake anchor block sub-assembly from the rear axle carrier subassembly.

14. SEPARATE UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR NO. 2
a. Remove the nut from the upper control arm assembly rear No. 2.





b. Using SST, separate the upper control arm assembly rear No. 2 from the rear axle carrier sub assembly.

NOTICE:
^ Pay careful attention not to damage the rear axle carrier because it is made of aluminum and may be damaged easily.
^ Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
^ Make sure that the SST is securely set to the rear axle carrier spacer.
^ If the rear axle carrier spacer has come off, replace the rear axle carrier with a new one.
^ Make sure that the string of the SST is securely tied to the vehicle.

15. SEPARATE UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR NO. 1
a. Jack up the rear axle assembly so that the bolt on the upper control arm assembly rear No. 1 can be removed.

HINT: Place a wooden block between the jack and rear axle carrier to prevent damage to the rear axle carrier.





b. Remove the bolt, washer and nut, and separate the upper control arm assembly rear No. 1 from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.





16. SEPARATE REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 1
a. Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the rear suspension arm assembly No. 1 from the rear axle carrier sub assembly

NOTICE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.





17. SEPARATE REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 2
a. Remove the bolt and nut, and separate the rear suspension arm assembly No. 2 from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

NOTICE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.

18. SEPARATE TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the nut from the toe control link sub-assembly.





b. Using SST, separate the toe control link sub-assembly from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

NOTICE:
^ Pay careful attention not to damage the rear axle carrier because it is made of aluminum and may be damaged easily.
^ Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
^ Make sure that the SST is securely set to the rear axle carrier spacer.
^ If the rear axle carrier spacer has come off, replace the rear axle carrier with a new one.
^ Make sure that the string of the SST is securely tied to the vehicle.

19. REMOVE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY
a. Using a plastic hammer, separate the drive shaft from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.
b. Remove the rear axle assembly.

NOTICE:
^ Be careful not to damage the boot.
^ Use a wire or an equivalent to keep the rear drive shaft assembly from hanging down.





20. REMOVE REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO. 2
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the bearing dust deflector No. 2 from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

21. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY
a. Hold the axle hub and bearing assembly in a vise between aluminum plates.

NOTICE: Do not overtighten the vise.





b. Remove the 4 bolts and axle hub and bearing assembly from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY
a. Hold the axle hub and bearing assembly in a vise between aluminum plates.

NOTICE: Do not overtighten the vise.





b. Install the axle hub and bearing assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)





2. INSTALL REAR WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR NO. 2
a. Using SST and a hammer, install the bearing dust deflector No. 2 to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.
SST 09951-01000, 09950-70010 (09951-07150)

HINT: Align the hole for the speed sensor in the bearing dust deflector No. 2 with the rear axle carrier sub assembly.

3. INSTALL REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY
a. Install the rear drive shaft assembly and rear axle assembly.





4. INSTALL UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR NO. 2
a. Install the upper control arm assembly rear No. 2 to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with a new nut.
Torque: 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)





5. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR NO. 1
a. Temporarily tighten the upper control arm assembly rear No. 1 to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt, washer and nut.

HINT: Install the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.





6. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 1
a. Temporarily tighten the rear suspension arm assembly No. 1 to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt and nut.

HINT: Install the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.





7. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 2
a. Temporarily tighten the rear suspension arm assembly No. 2 to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the bolt and nut.

HINT: Install the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.





8. INSTALL TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the toe control link sub-assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with a new nut.
Torque: 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)

9. INSTALL LOAD SENSING VALVE SENSOR BRACKET
10. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE





11. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE ANCHOR BLOCK
a. Install the parking brake anchor block sub-assembly to the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 76 Nm (775 kgf-cm, 56 ft. lbs.)

12. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
13. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY NO. 2
14. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY NO. 1
15. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
16. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING NO. 1
17. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING NO. 2
18. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
19. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR REAR
20. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT
a. Install a new rear axle shaft nut.
Torque: 290 Nm (2,957 kgf-cm, 214 ft. lbs.)

HINT: Stake the nut after inspecting for looseness and runout in the following steps.

21. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS
22. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB RUNOUT
23. INSTALL REAR DISC
24. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
25. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY





26. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT
a. Using a chisel and a hammer, stake the axle shaft nut.

27. STABILIZE SUSPENSION





28. FULLY TIGHTEN UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY REAR NO. 1
a. Fully tighten the upper control arm assembly rear No. 1 with the nut.
Torque: 161 Nm (1,642 kgf-cm, 119 inch lbs.)





29. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 1
a. Fully tighten the rear suspension arm assembly No. 1 with the bolt and nut.
Torque: 95 Nm (969 kgf-cm, 70 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.





30. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 2
a. Fully tighten the rear suspension arm assembly No. 2 with the bolt and nut.
Torque: 161 Nm (1,642 kgf-cm, 119 inch lbs.)

NOTICE: Turn the bolt while holding the nut.

31. INSTALL REAR TIRE
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)

32. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
33. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
34. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
35. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
