Parking Brake System: Service and Repair

PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY

COMPONENTS:





DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL





2. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the rear disc brake caliper assembly.

NOTICE: Hang the caliper with wire or equivalent.

b. Remove the No. 1 caliper plate (2 pieces).
3. REMOVE REAR DISC
a. Release the parking brake.





b. Put matchmarks on the rear disc and rear axle hub.
c. Remove the rear disc.

HINT: If the disc cannot be removed easily, turn the shoe adjuster until the wheel turns smoothly.





4. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
a. Using SST, remove the No. 2 parking brake shoe return spring.

5. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
a. Using SST, remove the No. 1 parking brake shoe return spring.

6. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
a. Slide the parking brake shoe, and remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.





7. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, remove the No. 1 shoe hold down spring cup, No. 1 compression spring and No. 1 shoe hold down spring pin.

b. Remove the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.

HINT: Use the service hole to retain the No. 1 hold down spring pin with your finger.





8. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, remove the No. 1 shoe hold down spring cup, No. 1 compression spring and No. 1 shoe hold down spring pin.

b. Remove the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly.

HINT: Use the service hole to retain the No. 1 hold down spring pin with your finger.





9. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
a. Remove the parking brake shoe lever.
10. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE ANCHOR BLOCK
a. Remove the rear axle hub and bearing assembly.





b. Remove the 2 nuts, cable support bracket and parking brake anchor block.

REASSEMBLY





1. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE ANCHOR BLOCK
a. Install the parking brake anchor block and cable support bracket with 2 nuts.
Torque: 76 Nm (775 kgf-cm, 56 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the rear axle hub and bearing assembly.
2. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
a. Apply a thin layer of high temperature grease to the area where the parking brake plate contacts the parking brake shoe.





3. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
a. Apply a thin layer of high temperature grease to the area where the parking brake shoe lever contacts the parking brake anchor block.
b. Install the parking brake shoe lever to the parking brake cable assembly.

NOTICE: Take care to install the correct parking brake shoe lever because the direction of the pin is different between left and right.





4. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, install the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly with the No. 1 shoe hold down spring cup, No. 1 compression spring and No. 1 shoe hold down spring pin.

HINT: Use the service hole to retain the No. 2 shoe hold down spring pin with your finger.





5. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
a. Using SST, install the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly with the No. 1 shoe hold down spring cup, No. 1 compression spring and No. 1 shoe hold down spring pin.

HINT: Use the service hole to retain the No. 1 shoe hold down spring pin with your finger.

6. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET





a. Apply high temperature grease to the thread and all joining areas of the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.





b. Install the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.





7. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
a. Install the No. 1 parking brake shoe return spring.





8. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
a. Install the No. 2 parking brake shoe return spring.





9. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
a. Make sure that all the parts are installed properly. If necessary, reinstall properly.
10. INSTALL REAR DISC
a. Align the matchmarks on the rear disc and rear axle hub.
11. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE





12. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
a. Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts and 2 new No. 1 caliper plates.
Torque: 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE:
^ Do not twist the brake hose.
^ Make sure that the bolts are free from damage and foreign matter.
^ Do not overtighten the bolts.

13. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
14. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL (for Automatic Transmission)
15. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL (for Automatic Transmission)
16. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL (for Manual Transmission)
17. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL (for Manual Transmission)
