DESCRIPTION

The four exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors are located on the hydro-carbon adsorber catalyst (HCAC).
The engine control module (ECM) applies the 5-volt reference voltage to the EGT sensor. The sensor changes the voltage between 0.1 V and 4.9 V according to the EGT. The ECM uses the EGT sensors to monitor the HCAC valve operation.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

To monitor the EGT sensor, the ECM measures the sensor voltage. If the sensor voltage deviates from the normal operating range, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction. When this malfunction is detected in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and sets the diagnosis trouble code (DTC).

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT: When viewed from the rear of the engine assembly, Bank 1 is on the left side and Bank 2 is on the right side.

PROCEDURE

1. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER OR TECHSTREAM
(a) Connect the intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Put the engine in inspection mode Inspection Mode Procedure.
(c) Turn the tester ON.
(d) Enter the following menus:
(1) Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / INI EX TEMP 1, INI EX TEMP 2, INI EX TEMP 3 and INI EX TEMP 4.
(2) Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Initial Exhaust Temp (In), Initial Exhaust Temp (Out), Initial Exhaust Temp B2(In) and Initial Exhaust Temp B2(Out).
(e) Read the value.
Standard:
Same as the actual exhaust gas temperature.

Result:

HINT:
- If there is a short circuit, the intelligent tester or Techstream will indicate -40°C (-40°F).
- If there is an open circuit, the intelligent tester or Techstream will indicate 1000°C (1832°F).

C -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
B -- READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER OR TECHSTREAM
A -- Continue to next step.
2. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER OR TECHSTREAM

(a) Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor connectors.
(b) Connect terminals 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 of the exhaust gas temperature sensor wire harness side connector.
(c) Connect the intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
(d) Turn the power switch ON (IG).
(e) Turn the tester ON.
(f) Enter the following menus:
(1) Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / INI EX TEMP 1, INI EX TEMP 2, INI EX TEMP 3 and INI EX TEMP 4.
(2) Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Initial Exhaust Temp (In), Initial Exhaust Temp (Out), Initial Exhaust Temp B2(In) and Initial Exhaust Temp B2(Out).
(g) Read the value.
Standard:
-40°C (-40°F)
NG -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR - ECM)
OK -- CONFIRM GOOD CONNECTION TO SENSOR. IF OK, REPLACE EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor connectors.
(b) Disconnect the ECM.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- CONFIRM GOOD CONNECTION TO ECM. IF OK, REPLACE ECM
4. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER OR TECHSTREAM
(a) Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor connectors.
(b) Connect the intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
(c) Turn the power switch ON (IG).
(d) Turn the tester ON.
(e) Enter the following menus:
(1) Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / INI EX TEMP 1, INI EX TEMP 2, INI EX TEMP 3 and INI EX TEMP 4.
(2) Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Initial Exhaust Temp (In), Initial Exhaust Temp (Out), Initial Exhaust Temp B2(In) and Initial Exhaust Temp B2(Out).
(f) Read the value(s).
Standard:
1000°C (1832°F)
NG -- CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR - ECM)
OK -- REPLACE EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR
5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the exhaust gas temperature sensor connectors.
(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- REPLACE ECM
