Rear Brake Squeak When Backing Up (Vehicle Cold Soaked)

Service Category
Brake

Section
Brake (rear)

Market
USA

Applicability

Introduction

Some vehicles may exhibit a squeak/squeal noise from the rear brakes during the first few applications. The noise is typically noticed after the vehicle has "cold soaked" and is being driven in reverse (backing up) and lightly braking. Once the brakes are warmed up, the noise typically goes away. This condition can be addressed by replacing the rear brake caliper mounting brackets and pads/shims/fitting kit, if appropriate. Follow the repair instructions in this bulletin to address this condition.

Diagnostic Procedure

1. Conduct a road test to verify the rear brake squeak. The condition usually occurs when backing up during light brake pedal pressure.

2. If the brake pads/shims have NOT been replaced previously AND the vehicle was produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VIN for the pad/shim change, replace BOTH the pads/shims/fitting kit AND the rear brake caliper mounting brackets with the new parts.Refer to Repair Procedures 1 and 2.

3. If the pads/shims have been replaced previously OR the vehicle was produced AFTER the Production Change Effective VIN for the pad/shim change and BEFORE the Production Change Effective VIN for the rear brake caliper mounting brackets, then replace the rear brake caliper mounting brackets ONLY.Refer to Repair Procedure 2.

NOTE

Do NOT replace the pads/shims again if the pad backing plate contains material stamp code "D6247".

Repair Procedure 1: Rear Brake Pads/Shims/Fitting Kit

Remove and replace the rear disc brake pad support plate (2 per each rear caliper), the rear disc brake pads, and/or anti-squeal shims.

NOTE
Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.

1. Remove the rear wheel.

2. Remove the rear disc brake caliper assembly by holding the 2 rear disc brake caliper slide pins and removing the 2 bolts.

3. Remove the 2 rear disc brake pads with the anti-squeal shims.

4. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims and the 2 pad wear indicator plates from each pad.

5. Remove the No. 1 rear disc brake pad support plate.

A. Remove the No. 1 rear disc brake pad support plate from the rear disc brake caliper mounting.

B. Clean the area where the support plate sits with a clean shop towel.

6. Remove the No. 2 rear disc brake pad support plate.

A. Remove the No. 2 rear disc brake pad support plate from the rear disc brake caliper mounting.

B. Clean the area where the support plate sits with a clean shop towel.

7. Install the No. 1 rear disc brake pad support plate to the rear disc brake caliper mounting.

NOTE
Ensure the brake caliper and pad support are securely in place with no looseness.

9. Install the rear anti-squeal shim kit.

A. Apply disc brake grease to the inside of the anti-squeal shims (area "1" in Figure 3).

NOTE

^ Make sure that disc brake grease is NOT applied onto the lining surface.

B. Install the 2 anti-squeal shims and the pad wear indicators to each of the 2 brake pads.

NOTE
Install the pad wear indicator and anti-squeal shims in the correct positions.

C. Apply a small amount of the disc brake grease (1 - 2 mm [0.04 - 0.08 in.] thick) to the areas indicated by "2" in Figure 3.

NOTE
Do NOT apply grease to the friction surfaces of the brake pads or the disc rotor.

10. Install the 2 rear disc brake pads with anti-squeal shim kit.

11. Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts.

Torque:
27 N*m (275 kgf*cm, 20 ft*lbf)
