PADS

FORD:
2003-2004 Expedition

LINCOLN:
2003-2004 Navigator

This article supersedes TSB 05-1-4 to update the Service Procedure.

ISSUE
Some 2003-2004 Expedition/Navigator vehicles built before 12/18/2003 may exhibit brake shudder (rotor thickness variation) due to the new "low dust" linings that were installed per TSB 04-5-2.

ACTION
Determine whether the vehicle has low dust linings installed in combination with the old level rotor, and replace the front rotors following the Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Visually inspect the front brake lining to determine if they have a slit in the middle (old style), or if the lining is solid (low dust) (Figure 1). If the low dust brake lining are installed proceed to Step 2. If the old style brake lining are installed do not continue with this TSB, follow normal diagnostics and repair procedures.

2. Check the build date of the front rotor. The build date is stamped on the inside of the rotor, between the fins (Figure 2). If the rotor date code is before 4H23 (4=2004, H=August, 23=23rd), and the front brake lining is the low dust lining, replace the front rotors. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 206-03 for front rotor replacement procedure. If the rotor date code is 4H23 or greater do not continue with this TSB, follow normal diagnostics and repair procedures.
