TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

Key Release Control Cable

Inspection and Repair Procedure

Refer to Attachment I.

1. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Place the transmission selector lever in the "D" position and set the parking brake.

3. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.

4. Remove the steering column shroud extension. Refer to Figure 1.

5. Remove the steering column shroud retaining bolts and remove the upper and lower shrouds.

6. Check for white paint on the prong end of the release cable or for the presence of a spacer between the lock cylinder housing and key release cable assembly. Refer to Figure 2. If the spacer or white paint is present, no further action is required. Reinstall the parts previously removed and connect the battery. If the spacer or white paint is not present, continue as follows:

7. Remove the ring assembly (bellows) and the right side instrument panel applique (Figure 1).

8. Remove the key release cable attaching screw (Figure 2).

9. Using needlenose pliers, compress the prongs at the end of the key release cable and pull the cable from the lock cylinder housing.

10. Using a pair of side cutters, slot the key release cable attaching hole as shown in Figure 3.

11. Position the spacer (in spacer kit E4LY-3F698-A) over the prong end of the cable (Figure 3), and reinstall the assembly into the lock cylinder housing. Use a small screwdriver to snap the prongs into place (Figure 4).
12. Place the new 5/16" O.D. - 3/16" I.D. flat washer (in spacer kit E4LY-3F698-A) on the key release cable attaching screw and install the screw and washer (Figure 4). Tighten the screw to 9-12 in.lbs. (3.3 - 4.4 N-m) torque.
13. To check the operation of the key release control cable system, perform the following:

^ Connect the battery and set the parking brake.
^ Start the engine.
^ Shift into "N" position.
^ Turn key to "OFF" position as far as possible toward the LOCK position.
^ Turn steering wheel 180~ in both directions.
^ The engine must turn off and the steering wheel must not lock.

14. Reinstall the instrument panel applique, the ring assembly (bellows), the upper and lower shrouds and the shroud extension.

Tire Information Placards

Installation

1. With a dry rag, clean the surface of the existing placard and the adjacent area of the B-pillar so that it is free of contaminants which could affect the adhesion of the new placard.

2. Peel off the protective backing and affix the new tire information placard to the inside of the passenger side B-pillar directly over the existing placard.

The new tire information placards for all vehicles identified on your listing of affected units are enclosed with this bulletin. If additional spacers and/or placards are required, do not order recall parts from Newark Export Supply.
