ISSUE:
Replacement guidelines have been developed for determining if the bumper isolator and bracket assembly can be reused after a low speed impact.
ACTION:
When repair to a front or rear bumper system is required after a low speed impact, inspect the bumper isolator and bracket assembly for damage using the following procedure.
1. Inspect for fluid damage. It must be dry.
2. Look for any damage such as dents to the inner or outer tube. They must not be damaged.
3. At ambient air temperature, try to twist the inner to outer tube by hand. The tube must not twist.
4. Measure the overall length of the isolator and bracket assembly and record the measurement.
5. Place the isolator and bracket assembly in an arbor press or equivalent.
a. Press and stroke the unit at least 1/2" (12.7 mm) and release the arbor press.
b. See if the unit returns to the overall length measured in Step 4. An isolator and bracket assembly that does not return to the original length, may have a loss of internal pressure or loss of fluid that would prevent it from functioning properly.
6. Minor straightening of the bumper plate on the isolator and bracket assembly is allowed provided that Steps 1 through 5 are met.
