COSMETIC SURFACE RUST ON CHASSIS COMPONENTS
FORD 1984 - ALL CAR LINES
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1984 - ALL CAR LINES
This article outlines a procedure to service a surface corrosion condition on exposed chassis components.
Although cosmetic surface corrosion on the exposed chassis portions of the subject vehicles (due to prolonged storage at the dealership) does not affect performance, it may be undesirable for "showroom" purposes. This concern may now be resolved at dealerships (with District prior approval) by using Super Seal undercoating material (material specification ESR-M7C74-A). To apply this material, use the following procedure:
1. Steam clean the complete chassis.
2. Cover and tape the following areas which are to be free of Super Seal material.
^ McPherson strut and shock absorber rods
NOTE: Failure to completely mask off the strut rod and seal area can result in premature wear of the component.
^ Driveshaft and slip yoke at transmission including extension housing seal.
^ Front brake caliper, rotor and splash shield.
^ Parking brake cable (wire only; conduit SHOULD NOT be masked)
NOTE: Wherever a parking brake cable enters a cable housing, the cable is to be masked for a distance of 3 inches and the end of the housing is to be masked also. Failure to mask these areas could result in premature wear of the component.
^ Exhaust system
^ Rack and pinion steering gear boots
^ FWD inboard and outboard C.V. joint boots
^ FWD interconnecting shafts
^ FWD transmission differential seals
^ FWD outboard C.V. joint bearing excludes seals
^ Rear axle vent system
3. Apply Super Seal undercoating material to the following components (where applicable):
^ Front and rear McPherson strut and shock absorber reservoir tube and mounting brackets
^ Front and rear suspension coil spring
^ Front and rear lower control arm assemblies
^ Front and rear upper control arm assemblies
^ Front and rear stabilizer bars and brackets
^ Front and rear K Brace
^ Body mount brackets
^ Cross members
^ Axle and bell housing
^ Fuel tank and shield
^ Engine pan
^ Transmission pan
^ Suspension spindle
^ Fuel and brake tubes, brackets and clips
^ Parking brake assembly brackets and cable conduit (cable wire to be masked for a distance of 3 inches from where the cable enters the cable housing)
^ Engine mount brackets
^ Steering gear linkage
NOTE: DO NOT apply directly on or above a catalytic converter, grass shields, other exhaust components or in a zone within approximately 10"-12" of any exhaust system component on both sides for the entire length of the exhaust system.
4. Apply paint to the driveshaft or FWD interconnecting shafts using enamel or latex chassis black paint.
NOTE: DO NOT use undercoating Super Seal material.
5. Remove covers/shields and clean up.
