WINDNOISE AND TURBULENCE NOISE - SERVICE TIPS
FORD ALL
LINCOLN-MERCURY ALL
Windnoise, turbulence: two concerns that sometimes are difficult to detect and that can result in frustrated service managers and technicians. We have some answers which are indicated below and so do you technicians. Provide your information and, if possible, photographs, and they will be included in future TSB's.

There is a small opening in the trim molding over the front door at the "B" pillar joint (Figure 5). The air enters the opening from the underside of the door to "B" pillar area. Apply a small bead of silicone rubber adhesive sealer (D6AZ-19562-A Clear, -B Black) into the opening on the top and wipe it level with the molding.

A wind whistle will sometimes occur at highway speeds in a crosswind. The noise is like a wind leak at the door sail area. This can be caused by the belt line window molding not being seated completely. A small bead of silicone rubber adhesive sealer smoothed into the opening along the bottom of the molding will stop the whistle (Figure 6).

Turbulence from outside rearview mirrors. This is caused by the trim around the edge of the mirror housing having gaps to the housing (Figure 7). Seal the gap with silicone rubber adhesive sealant.
1980-84 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town Car
Turbulence along windshield "A" post. This is commonly caused by a gap between the windshield molding and the windshield. Remove the molding and place a piece of foam tape (C6AZ-19627-A) on the underside of the molding. Reinstall the molding and the tape should fill the gap.
1982-83 Lincoin Continental
Turbulence at grille area. The air entering the grille opening hits against the GOP (Grille Opening Panel) and deflects air through the crack between the grille and the panel. To eliminate this problem, remove the grille and place a strip of foam tape around the edge of the opening on the panel and reinstall the grille.

Early models may have a turbulence at the front of the door at the belt line. The seal on the door was revised (Figure 8) and eliminates this turbulence. The new seal should be available through service.
1979-84 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis
If a windnoise is detected at highway speeds, it could result from a misalignment of the fender to the hood and body. This can be corrected or adjusted out of the normal speed range by re-aligning the hood and fender.
