A/T - AXOD Preventing Planetary Gear Burn-Up

TSB 89-35 (Dec)

SUBJECT: FORD AXOD

PREVENTING PLANETARY GEAR BURN-UP

1. Rear Planetary Support

Pay close attention to the bushings in the rear planetary support (Figure 1). If the bushings have moved, they may be covering the lube feed hole. If either bushing is out of position, replace the support. Keep in mind that these bushings are critical in controlling lube oil, and should show little or no wear.

2. Rear Lube Seal

Don't wait until the last minute to install the rear lube seal. Once the support is in the case (Figure 2), install the seal with the case upside down, plug the two lube holes in the rear Sun gear shaft with assembly lube, pour some solvent down the lube hole in the case, and check for leakage at the point where the seal contacts the rear support.

3. The Rear Lube Feed Tube

Always clean the old sealant from the ends of the rear lube feed tube, then Lock-tite the tube in place (Figure 3).

4. Valve Body Modifications

Once the lube circuit has been checked for leaks, (steps 1 - 3), modify the valve body to increase lube oil flow to the planetary gears. First, locate the rear lube check valve (Figure 4), then cut 3-1/2 coils from the check valve spring. Make sure you put the cut end of the spring away from the check valve so it will sit flat against the separator plate.

Next, locate the rear lube feed hole and the torque converter feed hole (Figure 5); then enlarge them to .076 (or 5/64") and .063 (or 1/16") respectively.
