TRANSMISSION - AXOD - HARSH 3-2 DOWNSHIFTS AT SLOW SPEEDS

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1988-90 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE:
Harsh 3-2 torque demand downshifts, when turning or accelerating and coasting to a slower speed, normally 15-30 MPH (24-48 KM/H) may be caused by;

^ Fluid levels too low or too high.

^ Throttle Valve (TV) Cable out of adjustment or damaged.

^ Engine or transaxle mounts separated or damaged.

^ Low/intermediate servo piston return spring cocked in its bore.

^ Main control calibration

ACTION:
Check fluid levels, Throttle Valve (TV) cable operation, engine/transaxle mounts, low/intermediate servo piston and main control calibration for proper operation. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

DIAGNOSIS AND SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Check transaxle fluid levels. Fluid level should be set to the "full" mark with the transaxle and engine at normal operating temperature.

CAUTION:
DO NOT OVERFILL

2. Check TV pressure. TV pressure should be at 12 p.s.i. Adjust TV cable if pressure is not correct. Refer to TSB # 89-15-10 but set to 12 p.s.i.

NOTE:
FOR CORRECT ADJUSTMENT OF THE TV CABLE, IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO REMOVE TV CABLE FROM MOUNTING BRACKET AT THROTTLE BODY. ALSO CHECK THAT THE MOUNTING BRACKET IS NOT BENT. THIS WILL CAUSE INCORRECT TV PRESSURE.

3. Check TV cable for damage. Look for loose crimp joints, slippage between outer black sheath and inner white piece of the TV cable housing in the area under the crimp at the throttle body. This may occur if the outer sheath has been pulled. If TV cable is damaged and/or will not hold the correct TV pressure adjustment, replace it.

4. Check engine/transaxle mounts for fluid leakage, tears or "rattles" (mounts should not make any noise when shaken). Replace if damaged.

NOTE:
ROAD TEST VEHICLE AT THIS POINT. IF CONCERN IS STILL PRESENT GO TO STEP 5.

5. Check the low/intermediate servo piston return spring. It may be cocked in the bore. Install spring retainer (FODZ-7G151-A) over end of low/intermediate servo return spring.

6. Install updated main control with revised calibrations (Refer to TSB # 90-4-11); (FODZ-7A100-B for 88 Continental and E90Y-7A100-B for 89/90 Continental).

NOTE:
EXCHANGE TRANSAXLE UNITS HAVE UPDATED MAIN CONTROLS.
