AIR CONDITIONING - INTERMITTENT LOSS OF COOLING DURING OPERATION IN HOT AND HUMID WEATHER
FORD: 1988-91 CROWN VICTORIA
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-90 TOWN CAR 1988-91 GRAND MARQUIS
ISSUE: There may be an intermittent loss of cooling from the air conditioning system while operating during hot and humid weather. When the vehicle is being driven, the discharge air temperature may occasionally rise to about 70 degrees F (21 degrees C) and the compressor will rapidly cycle.
^ This is usually noticed during acceleration.
^ It occurs because an internal restriction in the suction accumulator causes the pressure switch to cycle switch the compressor rapidly as refrigerant flow is increased.
^ Under some operating conditions, there may be an insufficient flow of refrigerant to the evaporator causing the A/C system to rapidly cycle similar to a low charge condition.
ACTION: Confirm the rapid cycle and, if necessary, replace the suction accumulator and install a new larger A/C liquid line (F0VY-19835-B) and a 1992 model condenser (F2AZ-19712-A). Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Check for rapid cycling of the compressor.
a. Attach a manifold and gauge set to the refrigerant system.
b. Test drive the vehicle and check for rapid cycling. Refer to the appropriate Car Service Manual, Section 36-32, for normal cycle rates and times.
NOTE: THIS OPERATION CAN ONLY BE DONE DURING A TEST DRIVE AND WITH WARM AMBIENT TEMPERATURES.
CAUTION: FOR SAFETY PURPOSES, AN OBSERVER SHOULD MONITOR THE GAUGES WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN.
2. If rapid cycling is verified, replace the suction accumulator (E6VY-19C836-A). Refer to the appropriate Car Service Manual, Section 36-32, for service details.
NOTE: GOOD ACCUMULATORS ARE IDENTIFIED BY A GREEN STICKER ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE ACCUMULATOR.
3. Install a new larger A/C liquid line (F0VY-19835-B) and a 1992 model condenser (F2AZ-19712-A). Refer to the 1992 Lincoln Town Car, Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Service Manual, Section 12-03, for installation details.
4. Recharge the A/C system with 2 lb. 10 oz. of refrigerant and install an "Authorized Modification Decal" indicating the revised refrigerant charge level.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
5. Check the vehicle for proper operation of the A/C system.
WARNING: USE EXTREME CARE AND FOLLOW ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS RELATED TO THE USE OF REFRIGERANTS WHEN MAKING THIS REPAIR.
