LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 COUGAR, GRAND MARQUIS, MARK VII, LINCOLN TOWN CAR

LIGHT TRUCK: 1988 E-SERIES, F-SERIES, BRONCO

ISSUE: No start, lack of power, a distributor that smokes or squeals, or a broken distributor gear or camshaft gear may be caused by a distributor drive gear that does not have enough vertical clearance at the engine cylinder block.

ACTION: To correct this, use the following service procedure to check the distributor shaft vertical end play clearance to determine if a new distributor is required.

1. Check the build date on the distributor decal. The affected distributors have build date codes of 7H10 through 7J25.

NOTE: Distributors that have a 3/4" black dot on the side of the distributor bowl have been inspected and are okay.

2. Remove the distributor cap and rotor.

3. Push the distributor shaft all the way down to make sure that it is bottomed out.

4. Position a dial indicator on the distributor shaft.

5. Pull up on shaft and measure vertical movement. If the measured vertical end play is less than .008", replace distributor. Refer to the distributor application chart on this page for the correct service part.
