Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 4 Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence:

Before installing cylinder head, wipe off engine block gasket surface and be certain no foreign material has fallen into cylinder bores, bolt holes or in the valve lifter area. It is good practice to clean out bolt holes with compressed air.
Some cylinder head gaskets are coated with a special lacquer to provide a good seal once the parts have warmed up. Do not use any additional sealer on such gaskets. If the gasket does not have this lacquer coating, apply suitable sealer to both sides.
Tighten cylinder head bolts a little at a time in three steps in the sequence shown in the Fig. 4. Final tightening should be to the torque specifications. After the bolts have been torqued to specifications, they should not be disturbed.
1. Remove intake manifold.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable at cylinder head.
3. On Mark VII, if left head is being removed, remove A/C compressor (if equipped). Also remove and wire power steering pump out of the way. If equipped with Thermactor System, disconnect hose from air manifold on left cylinder head.
4. On Town Car, if left head is being removed, remove power steering pump (if equipped).
5. On Mark VII, If right head is to be removed, remove alternator mounting bracket bolt and spacer, ground wire and air cleaner inlet duct, and A/C compressor bracket.
6. On Town Car, if right head is to be removed, remove air conditioning compressor and mounting bracket (if equipped).
7. On all models, if right head is to be removed on an engine with Thermactor System, remove air pump from bracket. Disconnect hose from air manifold.
8. Disconnect exhaust manifolds at exhaust pipes.
9. Remove rocker arm covers. If equipped with Thermactor System, remove check valve from air manifold.
10. Remove fulcrum bolts, oil deflectors (if used), fulcrums and rocker arms. On all engines, remove pushrods. Keep rocker arms and pushrods in order so they can be installed in the same position.
11. Remove head bolts and lift head off block.
12. Reverse procedure to install. Torque cylinder head bolts in sequence shown in Fig. 4. 55-65 ft. lbs., then torque to 65-72 ft. lbs.
