Steering Column: Description and Operation

The steering column used on vehicles equipped with airbags is of a modular construction and features easy to service electrical switches. The washer/wiper switch and the combination turn signal/hazard/horn/flash-to-pass/dimmer switch are attached with self-tapping screws.

The vehicle is equipped with either a brush type slip ring or a clockspring type slip ring. Removal and installation procedures for the two types are the same except where noted.

Fasteners used on steering column components must be replaced after removal. The fasteners are coated with a epoxy adhesive making them non-reusable.

Whenever the steering column is removed from the vehicle, or is separated from the steering gear, the steering column must be in locked position to prevent the steering wheel from being rotated accidentally and damaging the airbag slip ring.
