No-Load Test
Fig. 8 Starter No Load Test Connection. Gear Reduced Permanent Magnet Starter Motor:
1. Connect test equipment as shown in Fig. 8. Ensure current is not flowing through ammeter. Ensure starter is securely mounted in vise.
2. Disconnect starter from battery, then reduce resistance of rheostat until voltmeter indicates reading obtained while starter was running.
3. Ammeter should indicate starter no load current draw, refer to Starting and Charging/Starting System/Starter Motor/Diagrams/Electrical.
4. If current exceeds specifications, check for rubbing armature, bent starter shaft, binding starter bearings, or electrical shorts in armature or starter brush assembly.
