SPARK KNOCK-5.0L-ON ACCELERATION


FORD: 1984-91 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1984-90 TOWN CAR 1984-91 GRAND MARQUIS, MARK VII


ISSUE: Spark knock may occur on acceleration because of ignition timing.

ACTION: Retard the ignition timing 3~ BTDC if it is set at 10~ BTDC. Refer to the following service procedure.


1. Confirm the concern.

2. Disconnect the spout wire from the distributor.

3. Check for 10~ BTDC initial ignition timing.

4. Loosen the distributor hold-down bolt.

5. Rotate the distributor to reset ignition timing at 7~ BTDC.

6. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 17-25 lb ft (23-34 N-m).

7. Recheck the ignition timing to confirm 7~ BTDC setting.

8. Reconnect the spout wire to the distributor.

9. Road test the vehicle to be sure that spark knock has been eliminated.





Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
