Stall Speed Test
STALL TEST1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature, then apply parking and service brake for remainder of test.
2. Connect suitable tachometer to engine.
3. Press accelerator to Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position with transaxle selector lever in each drive range and reverse range while noting engine RPM. Engine stall speed should be 1873-2183 RPM for 3.0L or 1796-2096 RPM for 3.8L models in each range.
CAUTION: Do not maintain WOT in any gear range for more than 5 seconds. Also, if engine RPM recorded by tachometer exceeds the maximum specified RPM, release accelerator immediately.
4. After testing each of the following ranges, OD, D1 and R, move the selector lever to Neutral and run engine for approximately 15 seconds to allow converter to cool before testing next range.
5. If stall speeds were higher than specified for OD, D, and 1 ranges, the possible source of the problem could be a defective forward clutch, low-intermediate one-way clutch, or low-intermediate band or servo. If stall speed was higher than specified for R range, the possible source of the problem could be a defective forward clutch, low-intermediate one-way clutch, or reverse clutch. If stall speeds were too low, check engine tune-up. If engine is satisfactory, remove torque converter and check torque converter reactor one-way clutch for slippage.
