Cruise Control: Description and Operation

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The speed control system consists of operator controls, servo assembly, speed sensor, stoplamp switch, vacuum dump valve, horn relay, vacuum reservoir, check valve, amplifier assembly and all necessary wires and vacuum hoses. The servo assembly is mounted in the engine compartment and is connected to the throttle linkage with an actuator cable. The servo is connected to the vacuum reservoir and manifold through the check valve. The amplifier assembly is located behind the glove compartment, under the instrument panel. The speed control sensor is located on the the transmission or transaxle.

SYSTEM OPERATION

To operate the speed control system, vehicle speed must exceed 30 mph. When the ON-OFF switch is actuated, the system is ready to accept a set speed signal. When vehicle speed stabilizes (above 30 mph), and the ON switch is engaged, the operator may depress or release the SET-ACC button. This set speed will be maintained until a new speed has been set, the brake pedal has been depressed, or the system is turned off.
The vehicle speed may be reduced by applying the brake or clutch pedal and then resetting the speed using the method outlined above or by depressing the COAST switch. When the vehicle has slowed to the desired speed, the COAST switch is released and the new speed is set automatically. If the vehicle speed is reduced below 30 mph (48 km/h), the operator must manually increase the speed and reset the system.
The vehicle set speed may be increased manually by pressing the accelerator until the higher speed is reached, then depressing and releasing the SET/ACCEL button. Set speed can also be increased by depressing and holding the SET/ACCEL button. When set speed increases to the desired level, release the SET ACCEL button.
