^ TRANSMISSION - AODE - HARSH OR BUMP 4-3 COASTING DOWNSHIFT - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 8/23/93

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1994 TOWN CAR

ISSUE:
The AODE transmission may exhibit the following concerns:

^ Vehicle coasting down from 40 MPH in overdrive results in a harsh 4-3 downshift

^ Harsh 4-3 downshift when the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) is pushed and the throttle is closed

^ Back off throttle just before the 3-4 upshift, resulting in a harsh 3-4 upshift

^ Harsh Drive engagement at idle, cold, accompanied by the above 3-4 and 4-3 closed throttle shift symptoms

These concerns may be caused by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) programming.

ACTION:





Perform transmission diagnosis per the diagnostic flow chart in the Service Manual, Section 07-01-25, and, if necessary, replace the production Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with with a service PCM. Refer to the following PCM chart for correct parts usage, and to the Service Manual, Section 07-01, for service details
