DISASSEMBLY

WARNING:
- ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG MODULE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- CARRY A LIVE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE WITH THE AIR BAG AND TEAR SEAM POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- DO NOT SET A LIVE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE DOWN ON THE COVER TEAR SEAM. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE AIR BAG SURFACE CAN CONTAIN DEPOSITS OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A PRODUCT OF THE GAS GENERANT COMBUSTION THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN. WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.
- NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
- BEFORE INSTALLING THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE, CHECK IT FOR DAMAGE AND FOREIGN OBJECTS. IF THE AIR BAG MODULE IS DAMAGED, REPLACE IT. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- VEHICLE SENSOR ORIENTATION IS CRITICAL FOR CORRECT SYSTEM OPERATION. IF A VEHICLE EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) IS INVOLVED IN A COLLISION, INSPECT THE SENSOR MOUNTING BRACKET AND WIRING PIGTAIL FOR DEFORMATION. REPLACE AND CORRECTLY POSITION THE SENSOR OR ANY OTHER DAMAGED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS WHETHER OR NOT THE AIR BAG IS DEPLOYED.


CAUTION: When removing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, the seat backrest trim panel must be replaced.

NOTE:
- Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. The front seat backrest trim covers are to be installed new. Cleaning is permissible.
- If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seat back pad, trim cover and side air bag module must be installed. Install a new seat back frame only if necessary.
- Before disconnecting the battery, raise the seat to its highest position, then move and tilt the seat to its most forward position.

Vehicles with side air bags
1. Prepare the vehicle for front seat backrest disassembly.

1 Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.

PLEASE REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE COMPONENT OR SYSTEM TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS.

THE SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR.

TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).


2 Deactivate the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.

3 Remove the affected seat.

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES, AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.

Vehicles without side air bags
2. Remove the affected seat.

All vehicles
3. Remove the front seat backrest.







4. Disconnect the connectors at the rear of the front seat cushion.







5. Remove the seat backrest cover panel.
1 Remove the screw.
2 Carefully fold the panel to release the tension on the upper J-hooks.
3 Release the upper J-hooks.
4 Release the lower tabs.

CAUTION: When removing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, install a new seat backrest trim panel.

NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. New front seat backrest trim covers must be installed. Cleaning is permissible.







6. Release the J-clips.







7. Release the head restraint retainer covers.







8. Release the spring clip.

NOTE: The spring clip must be installed and positioned correctly. Without the spring clip, the head restraint will not be retained.

9. Remove the head restraint.

Vehicles with side air bags







10. Unzip the side air bag deployment chute.







11. Remove the side air bag nuts.

NOTE: Install new side air bag nuts if installing a new side air bag module. If the existing side air bag module is being reinstalled, retain the existing nuts.







12. Separate the side air bag module from the seat back frame.







13. Disconnect the side air bag module electrical connector.
1 Slide the side air bag electrical connector locking clip to disengage it.
2 Release the connector tabs by pushing in on them, then disconnect the side air bag module electrical connector.
14. Remove the side air bag module.

All vehicles







15. Remove the cover.

Vehicles with heated seats







16. Remove the heater pad.

All vehicles







17. Remove the hog rings.
18. Remove the cushion.

Vehicles with power lumbar







19. Remove and discard the rivets. Remove the lumbar motor.
20. Release the lumbar assembly from the bottom of the seat backrest frame.







21. Remove the lumbar assembly.

Vehicles without power lumbar
22. Remove the flexolator.

ASSEMBLY

WARNING:
- TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, AND NOTES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE.
- CHECK THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND ZIPPER FOR DAMAGE. THE DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND ZIPPER MUST NOT BE REPAIRED IF THERE IS ANY DAMAGE TO THE DEPLOYMENT CHUTE OR ZIPPER. THE SEAT BACK TRIM COVER AND DEPLOYMENT CHUTE MUST BE INSTALLED NEW AS A UNIT. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
- THE DEPLOYMENT SEAM CANNOT BE REPAIRED OR RESEWN. A TRIM COVER REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE BOLSTER OR SIDE FACING MUST BE REPLACED AS A UNIT.
- IF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE IS NOT CORRECTLY POSITIONED AND COMPLETELY ZIPPED, THE SIDE AIR BAG CANNOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
- ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG MODULE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- CARRY A LIVE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE WITH THE AIR BAG AND TEAR SEAM POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.


CAUTION: When installing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, the seat backrest trim panel must be replaced.

NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. The front seat backrest trim covers are to installed new. Cleaning is permissible.

Vehicles without power lumbar
1. Install the flexolator.

Vehicles with power lumbar







2. Install the lumbar assembly.







3. Install the lumbar motor and new rivets.

Vehicles with side air bag







4. Connect the side air bag module electrical connector.
1 Install the connector to the side air bag module.
2 Slide the side air bag module electrical connector locking clip to secure the connector to the side air bag module.
5. Make sure the electrical connector is securely fastened to the side air bag module.







6. Position the side air bag module onto the front seat back frame mounting bracket.

WARNING:
- INSPECT THE MOUNTING SURFACES OF THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE AND THE SEAT BACK FRAME MOUNTING BRACKET FOR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS BEFORE INSTALLING THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- INSPECT THE SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND THE SIDE BAG CAVITY IN THE SEAT BACK PAD FOR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- IF THE AIR BAG COVER HAS SEPARATED OR THE AIR BAG MATERIAL HAS BEEN EXPOSED, INSTALL A NEW SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE AIR BAG MODULE. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.








7. Remove the side air bag nuts.

NOTE: Install new side air bag nuts if a new side air bag module is being installed. If the original side air bag module is being reinstalled, retain the existing nuts.

All vehicles
8. Position the cushion.







9. Install the hog rings.

Vehicles with heated seats







10. Install the heater pad.

Vehicles with side air bags







11. After installing the hog rings across the top bolster, work the cover down to the chute. Install the cushion pad and cover.
- The air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the seat back frame.
- Align the air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it covers the length of the side air bag module, but does not cover the top or the bottom of the side air bag module.

NOTE: Be sure the air bag chute is fed through the slit in the pad.

12. Install the side air bag chute.







13. Position the air bag deployment chute.
1 Insert the outboard side of the air bag deployment chute between the seat back pad and the side air bag module, pulling it around the outboard side of the seat back frame.
2 Insert the inboard side of the air bag deployment chute between the seat back pad and the side air bag module from the inboard side of the seat back.

WARNING:
- THE DEPLOYMENT SEAM CANNOT BE REPAIRED OR RESEWN. A TRIM COVER REQUIRING INSTALLATION OF A NEW BOLSTER OR SIDE FACING MUST BE INSTALLED AS A UNIT. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
- CHECK THE SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND ZIPPER FOR DAMAGE. THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND ZIPPER MUST NOT BE REPAIRED. IF THERE IS ANY DAMAGE TO THE DEPLOYMENT CHUTE OR ZIPPER, A NEW SEAT BACK TRIM COVER AND DEPLOYMENT CHUTE MUST BE INSTALLED AS A UNIT.
- IF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE IS NOT CORRECTLY POSITIONED AND COMPLETELY ZIPPED, THE SIDE AIR BAG CANNOT DEPLOY CORRECTLY.








14. Zip the air bag deployment chute completely closed, then position the zipper tail at the top of the air bag deployment chute, into the seat back opening.
- The air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the seat back frame.
- Align the air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it covers the length of the side air bag module, but does not cover the top or the bottom of the side air bag module.

NOTE: Be sure the side air bag deployment chute is correctly positioned, before proceeding to the next step.


All vehicles
15. Install the spring clip.

NOTE: The spring clip must be installed and positioned correctly. Without the spring clip, the head restraint will not be restrained.

16. Install the head restraint.







17. Install the head restraint retainer covers.







18. Install the pivot bolt.







19. Install the bolts.







20. Install the J-clips.







21. Install the seat backrest trim panel.
1 Angle the seat backrest cover panel up and inward.
2 Install the upper J-hooks.
3 Locate and install the lower tabs.
4 Install the screw.

CAUTION: When installing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, install a new seat backrest trim panel.

NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. New front seat backrest trim covers must be installed. Cleaning is permissible.







22. Connect the electrical connectors.
23. Install the front seat backrest.

Vehicles with side air bags
24. Restore the vehicle to operating condition.
1 Install the affected seat.

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES, AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SEAT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.

2 Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.

3 With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

WARNING: THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL IS FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.

4 Check the restraint system for correct operation.

Vehicles without side air bags
25. Restore the vehicle to operating condition.
1 Install the affected seat.
2 Check the active restraint system for correct operation.
