Side Air Bag Wiring Harness

REMOVAL
WARNING:
- ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIRBAG MODULE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE AIR BAG SURFACE CAN CONTAIN DEPOSITS OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A PRODUCT OF THE GAS GENERANT COMBUSTION THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN. WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.
- NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
1. Prepare the vehicle for side air bag wiring harness removal.
1 Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
WARNING:
- TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.
- PLEASE REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE COMPONENT OR SYSTEM TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS.
- THE SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR.
- TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).
2 Deactivate the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.
3 Remove the affected seat.
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES, AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.
2. Remove the seat backrest cover panel.
1 Remove the screw.
2 Carefully fold the panel to release the tension on the upper J-hooks.
3 Release the upper J-hooks.
4 Release the lower tabs.
CAUTION: When removing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, install a new seat backrest trim panel.
NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. New front seat backrest trim covers must be installed. Cleaning is permissible.
3. Release the J-clips.
4. Unzip the side air bag deployment chute.
5. Remove the side air bag nuts.
NOTE: Install new side air bag nuts if installing a new side air bag module. If the existing side air bag module is being reinstalled, retain the existing nuts.
6. Position the seat back trim cover and seat back pad forward enough to access the side air bag module.
7. Separate the side air bag module from the seat back frame.
8. Disconnect the side air bag module electrical connector.
1 Slide the side air bag electrical connector locking clip to disengage it.
2 Release the connector tabs by pushing in on them, then disconnect the side air bag module electrical connector.
9. Disconnect the side air bag module wiring harness electrical connector at the rear of the cushion frame.
10. Remove the side air bag wiring harness. Note and record the routing of the side air bag wiring harness.
INSTALLATION
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.
1. Route the wiring harness as noted during the removal procedure.
2. Connect the side air bag module wire harness electrical connector at the rear of the seat cushion frame.
3. Connect the side air bag module electrical connector.
1 Install the connector to the side air bag module
2 Slide the side air bag module electrical connector locking clip to secure the connector to the side air bag module.
4. Make sure the electrical connector is securely fastened to the side air bag module.
5. Position the side air bag module onto the front seat back frame mounting bracket.
WARNING:
- INSPECT THE MOUNTING SURFACES OF THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE AND THE SEAT BACK FRAME MOUNTING BRACKET FOR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS BEFORE INSTALLING THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- INSPECT THE SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND THE SIDE AIR BAG CAVITY IN THE SEAT BACK PAD FOR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS AND REMOVE. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- BEFORE INSTALLING THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE, CHECK IT FOR DAMAGE AND FOREIGN OBJECTS. IF THE AIR BAG MODULE IS DAMAGED, REPLACE IT. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- IF THE AIR BAG COVER HAS SEPARATED OR THE AIR BAG MATERIAL HAS BEEN EXPOSED, INSTALL A NEW SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE AIR BAG MODULE. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
6. Install the new side air bag module retaining nuts.
7. Reposition the seat back pad and trim cover to the seat back frame.
8. Position the air bag deployment chute.
1 Insert the outboard side of the air bag deployment chute between the seat back pad and the side air bag module, pulling it around the outboard side of the seat back frame.
2 Insert the inboard side of the air bag deployment chute between the seat back pad and the side air bag module from the inboard side of the seat back.
WARNING:
- THE DEPLOYMENT SEAM CANNOT BE REPAIRED OR RESEWN. A TRIM COVER REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE BOLSTER OR SIDE FACING MUST BE REPLACED AS A UNIT. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
- CHECK THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND ZIPPER FOR DAMAGE. THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND ZIPPER MUST NOT BE REPAIRED. IF THERE IS ANY DAMAGE TO THE DEPLOYMENT CHUTE OR ZIPPER, A NEW SEAT BACK TRIM COVER AND DEPLOYMENT CHUTE MUST BE INSTALLED NEW AS A UNIT.
- IF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE IS NOT CORRECTLY POSITIONED AND COMPLETELY ZIPPED, THE SIDE AIR BAG CANNOT DEPLOY CORRECTLY.
9. Zip the air bag deployment chute completely closed, then position the zipper tail at the top of the air bag deployment chute, into the seat back opening.
- The air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the seat back frame.
- Align the air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it covers the length of the side air bag module, but does not cover the top or the bottom of the side air bag module.
NOTE: Be sure the side air bag deployment chute is correctly positioned, before proceeding to the next step.
10. Fasten the J-clips.
11. Install the seat backrest cover panel.
1 Angle the seat backrest cover panel up and inward.
2 Install the upper J- hooks.
3 Locate and install the lower tabs.
4 Install the screw.
CAUTION: When installing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, install a new seat backrest trim panel.
NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. New front seat backrest trim covers must be installed. Cleaning is permissible.
12. Restore the vehicle to operating condition.
1 Install the affected seat.

2 Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.
3 With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
WARNING: THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL IS FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.
4 Check the restraint system for correct operation.
