Removal

CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Drain the cooling system.
4. Remove the LH and RH valve covers.
5. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner and idler pulleys.
6. Remove the coolant pump.
7. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
8. Disconnect the lower radiator hose.
9. Remove the oil pan.
10. Remove the power steering pump.
11. Remove the crankshaft front seal.
12. Disconnect the 2 Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors and the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connectors.
13. Remove 15 bolts, the stud bolt and the engine front cover.
^ Remove and discard the gaskets.

Installation

1. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.

Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of sealant.
^ Clean all sealing surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep.
^ Install a new gasket on the engine front cover.





2. NOTE: The engine front cover must be installed and the bolts tightened within 4 minutes of applying sealant.

Apply a 6 mm (0.23 inch) diameter dot of silicone gasket and sealer to the cylinder block, the lower cylinder block and the cylinder head mating surfaces.





3. NOTE: Number 14 is a stud and washer assembly.

Position the engine front cover and install the 15 bolts and the stud bolt.
^ Tighten in the sequence shown to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

4. Connect the 2 Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors and the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connectors.
5. Install the crankshaft front seal.
6. Install the power steering pump.
7. Install the oil pan.
8. Connect the lower radiator hose.
9. Connect the upper radiator hose.
10. Install the coolant pump.
11. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner and idler pulleys.
12. Install the LH and RH valve covers.
13. Connect the battery ground cable.
14. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
