TURNING FEATURE OFF

LINCOLN:
2006 Zephyr

2007-2009 MKZ

This article supersedes TSB 08-13-8 to update the vehicle model year coverage.

ISSUE
Some 2006 Zephyr and 2007-2009 MKZ customers may perceive problems with the global open system which may include: system operates erratically, false operation, both front windows open intermittently or the roof opening panel (if equipped) opens intermittently. When normal diagnostics do not identify a concern with the operation of the system, customers may request that the global open be disabled.

This information is provided so customers who request the change may have the function turned off at their expense.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
THIS PUBLICATION IS FOR THOSE OWNERS THAT WISH TO HAVE THE FEATURE TURNED OFF AT THEIR EXPENSE.

NOTE
BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DIAGNOSE INTERMITTENT GLOBAL OPEN CONCERNS, CHECK BASIC SYSTEM OPERATION (INCLUDING WINDOW AND/OR ROOF OPENING PANEL OPERATION) AND SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS). REPAIR ALL CONCERNS WITH BASIC WINDOW OR ROOF OPENING PANEL OPERATION AND ANY SJB DTCS BEFORE TAKING THE STEP TO DISABLE GLOBAL OPEN FUNCTION.

Principles Of Operation:

The SJB is a combination of multifunction electronic module and an interior fuse panel. It is located on the left hand A-pillar, under the instrument panel. SJB function is to control multiple vehicle systems. Two of the multiple controlled systems are the global open feature for front windows and roof opening panel (if equipped). To open the windows a signal is received from the remote keyless entry (RKE) or integrated key head (IKT) transmitter when the un-lock button is pressed for more than two consistent seconds. Once the signal is received from the RKE or IKT, the SJB sends a signal on the global open circuit, to open both front door window motors and the roof opening panel motor (if equipped).

NOTE
IF THE ACCESSORY DELAY RELAY IS ACTIVE, THE GLOBAL OPEN FEATURE WILL NOT OPERATE.

Global Open Feature Activation Using The RKE Or IKT Transmitter:

Refer to the correct model year Owners Guide under the Locks and Security section.

NOTE
MOST OF THE REPORTED ISSUES WITH GLOBAL OPEN SYSTEM FEATURE HAVE BEEN ATTRIBUTED TO INADVERTENTLY PRESSING THE RKE OR IKT TRANSMITTER UN-LOCK BUTTON, FOR MORE THAN TWO SECONDS. THIS MAY BE PERCEIVED AS AN INCORRECT FUNCTION OF THE GLOBAL SYSTEM.

Visual Checks:

^ Before attempting to diagnose the global open feature, be sure that the driver is not inadvertently pressing and releasing the IKT transmitter unlock button for more than two seconds. Discuss the condition with the owner to determine if improper customer operation of the RKE function is the issue.

^ Make certain no dirt, ink or metal objects are covering or touching the RKE or IKT transmitter pad or unlock button. Remove or clean any dirt, ink, or metal objects covering or blocking the RKE/IKT transmitter buttons before proceeding.

^ Check for any added on components spliced to the electrical parts of the SJB, windows or roof opening panel, which may prevent proper function of the global open feature.

^ Check for the correct voltage of the RKE or IKT transmitter batteries; refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-14.

Service Tips:

1. Does the Global Open Function operate with normal RKE/IKT command?

a. No - Diagnose the Global Open Function using normal, WSM, Section 501-11. Then proceed to Step 2.

b. Yes - Proceed to Step 2.

2. Does the customer wish to have the feature turned off?

a. Yes - Check the vehicle built date:

(1) If built on or before 09/1/2006 proceed to Step 3.

(2) If built from 09/2/2006 to 12/3/2007 proceed to Step 4.

(3) If built after 12/3/2007 proceed to Step 5.

3. For units built on or before 09/1/2006 the feature cannot be disabled. This is the vehicle feature designed intent. If other abnormal conditions exist, follow normal WSM diagnostics in section 501-11. Return the vehicle to the owner and explain how the feature works.

4. For units built from 09/2/2006 to 12/2/2007, the feature software and hardware can be replaced. For these units replace the SJB per WSM, Section 419-10, and use the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) to disable the feature. Use the IDS Global Open - Disable Procedure steps to disable the feature once the new level SJB has been installed.

NOTE
THE NEW IMPROVED SJB WILL HAVE A NEW KEY PAD SECURITY CODE CARD ATTACHED TO IT (IF EQUIPPED). NOTIFY THE OWNER OF THE NEW SECURITY KEY PAD CODE.

NOTE
THE NEW IMPROVED SJB HAS AN INTERNAL RKE ANTENNA. THE EXTERNAL RKE ANTENNA IS NO LONGER NEEDED. IF EQUIPPED WITH ORIGINAL RKE ANTENNA, SECURE OR REMOVE THE ORIGINAL RKE ANTENNA.

5. For units built on or after 12/3/2007 the feature software can be disabled. Smart Junction Box (SJB) replacement is not needed when built after 12/3/2007. Use the IDS scan tool to disable the feature. Use the IDS Global Open - Disable Procedure.

IDS Global Open - Install And Disable Procedure

1. Connect service tool to the vehicle via the Data Communication Link (DCL).

2. ID the vehicle.

3. Select Module Programming.

NOTE
STEPS 4 THROUGH 6 USED ONLY WHEN NEW SJB INSTALLED.

4. Select Programmable Module Installation (GEM).

5. Follow screen instructions to install new GEM.

6. After the new GEM has successfully been installed, turn off the feature using Programmable Parameters.
