Body Control Systems: Description and Operation
Module Controlled Functions
NOTE: The Smart Junction Box (SJB) is also known as the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
The vehicle is equipped with 4 multifunction electronic modules:
- Driver Door Module (DDM)
- Driver Seat Module (DSM)
- SJB
- Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module
Driver Door Module (DDM)
The DDM (located in the driver door) allows the customer to program a personalized seat position that can be recalled using the memory set switch or a Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter (part of the Intelligent Access (IA) [PATS with push button start key). In addition to the position of the LH mirror, the DDM also indirectly controls the position of the RH mirror and the adjustable pedals. The DDM is hardwired to the power mirror switch, driver mirror, memory set switch and sends messages over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) to the DSM to adjust the RH mirror and the adjustable pedals. Refer to Hydraulic System, Brakes &/or Brake Pedal Assy for information on the adjustable pedals. Refer to Mirrors for information on the exterior mirrors.
Driver Seat Module (DSM)
The DSM (located under the driver seat) controls the customer selected comfort functions. These functions are the memory seat, memory RH mirror and memory pedals. Up to 2 personal settings can be programmed into the DSM memory and when selected, the DSM returns the customer adjustable features to the programmed positions. For programming the memory feature, refer to Doors, Hood and Trunk &/or Locks.
Remote Function Actuator (RFA) Module
The RFA module (located behind the glove compartment) receives inputs from/controls the components/systems listed below:
- Antenna, console (front)
- Antenna, console (rear)
- Antenna, seat (rear)
- Backup transceiver (located in the rear of the floor console)
- Initial engagement of the starter (start signal)
- IA
- Keyless entry keypad
- Luggage compartment lid ajar switch (located in the luggage compartment lid latch)
- Luggage compartment lid latch release
- Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS)
- Perimeter anti-theft
- Power door locks (including smart locks, autolocking and luggage compartment lid release)
- Remote Functions Receiver (RFR) module (located above the headliner near the RH sun visor)
- Start/stop switch (located in the instrument panel, right of the steering column)
The IA system is contained in the RFA module. Refer to Doors, Hood and Trunk &/or Locks.
Smart Junction Box (SJB)
NOTE: The time-out for the battery saver relay and the accessory delay relay (both are controlled by the SJB) is one minute if the vehicle has less than 80 km (50 miles). Once the vehicle passes the approximate mileage threshold of 80 km (50 miles), the time-out for both relays is 10 minutes, as described in the Owner's Literature. For the battery saver relay, refer to Lighting and Horns. For the accessory delay relay, refer to Windows and Glass.
The SJB (located under the instrument panel, left of the steering column) is a combination of a multifunction electronic module and a fuse panel. The following systems are controlled by the SJB:
- Accessory delay relay
- Battery saver relay
- Exterior lighting
- Interior lighting
- Heated rear window
- Horn
- Perimeter anti-theft
- Post crash alert
- Power door locks (including smart locks, autolocking and luggage compartment lid release)
- RKE/keyless entry keypad
- Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Post Crash Alert
The post crash alert function is controlled by the SJB. If the Restraints Control Module (RCM) determines an impact of severity enough to deploy the air bags has occurred (the air bags can or cannot be deployed by the RCM), the RCM sends a message to the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN), which sends a message to the SJB over the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) and the SJB activates the post crash alert function by repeatedly sounding the horn 3 times, then off for 4 seconds, etc., until the battery dies or the function is turned off. The hazard lamps also flash with the horn sounding, however, the hazard lamps keep flashing during the horn off cycle.
The post crash alert function can be turned off by:
- pressing the hazard switch (may need to be pressed more than once).
- pressing the Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (IKT) key (PATS only), or the IA key (PATS with push button start) UNLOCK button.
- pressing the IKT key (PATS only) or the IA key (PATS with push button start) key PANIC button.
This feature acts similar to the perimeter alarm, but the horn cycle is different. The perimeter alarm function sounds the horn on and off, in regular intervals until 2 minutes and 45 seconds have elapsed, the battery dies or the function is deactivated. Turning the ignition ON does not deactivate the post crash alert function, but deactivates an activated perimeter alarm. The post crash alert function cannot be configured off.
Welcome/Farewell Strategy
The welcome/farewell strategy is controlled by the SJB and has been modified to a new strategy. When the vehicle has been unlocked using the unlock button on the RKE transmitter, the new strategy is activated. Also, when the vehicle is locked using the RKE system, the new strategy is activated. This new strategy is not used by the SJB if the vehicle is opened using a key in the door lock cylinder or if the vehicle is exited without a button press of the RKE transmitter. Locking (or unlocking) the doors with the door lock switch also does not affect this strategy.
Welcome/Farewell Strategy
- Turn signals provide a 400 ms flash when the lock button is pressed. When the unlock button is pressed, there is one long flash.
- Illuminated entry has park lamps, puddle lamps, interior lights and backlighting on (no headlamps).
- Illuminated exit has park lamps, interior lights, backlighting on with the headlamps and puddle lamps off.
