Pinpoint Tests

Pinpoint Test AH: No Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 14, Module Communications Network for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

The Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)
- Audio Control Module (ACM)
- Audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module (if equipped)
- Driver Door Module (DDM) (if equipped)
- Driver Seat Module (DSM) (if equipped)
- Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) (if equipped)
- Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM)
- Liftgate/Trunk Module (LTM)
- Passenger Climate Controlled Seat Module (PCSM) (part of the steering gear) (if equipped)
- Headlamp Control Module 2 (HCM-2) (if equipped)
- HVAC module (if equipped)
- Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM) (if equipped)
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) (gateway module)
- Rear Entertainment Module (RETM) (if equipped)
- Rear Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (RHVAC) module (if equipped)
- Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module (if equipped)
- Smart Junction Box (SJB)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) (if equipped)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) (if equipped)



PINPOINT TEST AH: NO MS-CAN COMMUNICATION, ALL MODULES ARE NOT RESPONDING

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Inspection and Verification

NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings. Refer to Battery.

AH26 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE APIM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: APIM C3342 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AH27.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH77.

AH27 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DDM


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Door Module (DDM).
- Is the vehicle equipped with a DDM?

Yes
GO to AH28.

No
GO to AH29.

AH28 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DDM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: DDM C501a .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AH29.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH78.

AH29 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - HCM-2


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Headlamp Control Module 2 (HCM-2).
- Is the vehicle equipped with an HCM-2?

Yes
GO to AH30.

No
GO to AH31.

AH30 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE HCM-2 DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: HCM-2 Inline C913 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AH31.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH79.

AH31 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - RHVAC MODULE


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Rear Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (RHVAC) module.
- Is the vehicle equipped with an RHVAC module?

Yes
GO to AH32.

No
GO to AH33.

AH32 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE RHVAC MODULE DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: RHVAC Module C9115 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AH33.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH80.

AH33 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - RETM


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Rear Entertainment Module (RETM).
- Is the vehicle equipped with an RETM?

Yes
GO to AH34.

No
GO to AH35.

AH34 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE RETM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: RETM C9115 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AH35.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH81.

AH35 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - SIDE OBSTACLE DETECTION


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with side obstacle detection.
- Is the vehicle equipped with side obstacle detection?

Yes
GO to AH36.

No
REPAIR the circuits. CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

AH36 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SOD-L DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) C4230 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AH37.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH82.

AH37 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SOD-R DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) C4229 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH83.

AH38 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE SJB DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: SJB C2280b .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH65.

No
GO to AH39.

AH39 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE RFA MODULE DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: RFA Module C2153d .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH66.

No
GO to AH40.

AH40 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE ACM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Audio Control Module (ACM) C240c .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH67.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with an audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module, GO to AH41.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an audio DSP module, GO to AH42.

AH41 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE AUDIO DSP MODULE DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Audio DSP Module C4326a .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH68.

No
GO to AH42.

AH42 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE FCIM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM) C2403 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH69.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Liftgate/Trunk Module (LTM), GO to AH43.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an LTM, GO to AH43.

AH43 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE LTM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: LTM C4174b .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH70.

No
GO to AH44.

AH44 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE HVAC MODULE DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: HVAC Module C2356a .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH71.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Passenger Climate Controlled Seat Module (PCSM), GO to AH45.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a PCSM, GO to AH46.

AH45 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE PCSM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: PCSM C3365c .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH72.

No
GO to AH46.

AH46 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE IPC DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) C220 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH73.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with an Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM), GO to AH47.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an ILCM, GO to AH48.

AH47 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE ILCM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: ILCM C3256 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH74.

No
GO to AH48.

AH48 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DSM


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Seat Module (DSM).
- Is the vehicle equipped with a DSM?

Yes
GO to AH49.

No
GO to AH50.

AH49 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE DSM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: DSM C341d .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AH75.

No
GO to AH50.

- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM).
- Is the vehicle equipped with a DCSM?

Yes
GO to AH51.

No
GO to AH52.
