This article supersedes TSB 09-23-9 to update the Service Labor Time Standards.

ISSUE
A limited number of 2010 Edge, Flex, Taurus, MKX, MKS and MKT vehicles equipped with a 6F50/6F55 all wheel drive (AWD) transmission may experience a power transfer unit (PTU) compression seal leak.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Transmission fluid (red in color) leakage is diagnosed as between the PTU assembly and transmission case, and referred to in the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 308-07B as a PTU compression seal leak.

With the PTU removed from the vehicle look at the white sticker on the PTU, which has imprinted on it an identifying serial number that will be visible directly under the bar code. (Figure 1)

If the first five digits following the letter F in this number are between 09233 and 09238, then the entire PTU should be replaced.

If the first five digits are not within this range, then repair with a new PTU compression seal and link shaft seal per the WSM, Section 308-07B.
