Pinpoint Test E: One Or More Switch Illumination is Inoperative

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 71, Cluster and Panel Illumination for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

The Smart Junction Box (SJB) provides voltage to the dimmable switches based on input from the instrument panel dimmer switch.

When the delayed accessory relay is energized, voltage is provided to the non-dimmable switches.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Illuminated switch

PINPOINT TEST E: ONE OR MORE SWITCH ILLUMINATION IS INOPERATIVE

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

-------------------------------------------------
E1 CHECK THE WINDOW CONTROL SWITCH ILLUMINATION

- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: Make sure the LH front window control switch does not have the passenger window control switches locked out.
- Observe the illumination on all the window control switches.
- Are all the window control switches illuminated?

Yes
GO to E2.

No
GO to E3.

-------------------------------------------------
E2 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE ILLUMINATED SOURCE

NOTE: If the instrument panel dimmer switch illumination is the inoperative source, increase the backlighting brightness to the highest setting before unplugging the instrument panel dimmer switch connector.

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Inoperative Illumination Source.
- Ignition ON.
- NOTE: If the headlamp switch illumination is the inoperative source, unplugging the headlamp switch connector causes the SJB to turn the exterior lights on by default.
- Place the headlamp switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position.
- Increase the backlighting brightness to the highest setting.
- Measure the voltage between the inoperative illuminated switch, harness side and ground as follows:

- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes
For the headlamp switch, the ambient lighting select switch, the ambient lighting dimmer switch, the adjustable pedal switch, the floor shifter or the memory set switch, GO to E3.

For any other switch, INSTALL a new switch in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REPAIR the voltage supply circuit in question for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
E3 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE ILLUMINATED SOURCE USING THE CONNECTOR GROUND

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Suspect Window Control Switch (If Not Illuminated).
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the inoperative illuminated component, harness side and ground as follows:

- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes
INSTALL a new component in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
REPAIR the ground circuit in question for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
