Shift Interlock: Service and Repair




Brake Shift Interlock Override

All vehicles

1. NOTE: If it is necessary to use the override procedure to move the selector lever out of the PARK position, it is possible that an electrical failure has occurred. Using the scan tool check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). This vehicle is equipped with a brake shift interlock feature that prevents the selector lever from being moved out of PARK when the ignition is in the ON position until the brake pedal is applied. If the selector lever cannot be moved out of the PARK position when the ignition is in the ON position and the brake pedal is applied:
Apply the parking brake, turn the ignition key to the off position, and remove the key.

2. Using a suitable tool, carefully pry off and remove the Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) access panel.





3. NOTE: Selector lever trim panel removed for clarity.
Apply the brake pedal. Gently pull and hold the BSIA (Brake Shift Interlock Actuator) lever while pulling the gearshift lever out of the PARK position and into the NEUTRAL position.






4. Install the BSIA (Brake Shift Interlock Actuator) access panel.

5. Using a suitable tool, carefully pry off and remove the Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) access panel.





6. Apply the brake pedal. Using a suitable tool, press and hold the BSIA (Brake Shift Interlock Actuator) lever while pulling the gearshift lever out of the PARK position and into the NEUTRAL position.





7. Install the BSIA (Brake Shift Interlock Actuator) access panel.





All vehicles

8. Apply the brake pedal, start the vehicle, and release the parking brake.
