Pinpoint Test AM: The Powertrain Malfunction (Wrench) Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On (Non-Hybrid)

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the powertrain malfunction data from the PCM for the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) status and the transaxle status and from the 4X4 control module for the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) status over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When a fault condition exists in the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) system or in the transaxle, the PCM provides the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) with a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on. When a AWD (All-Wheel Drive) fault condition exists, the 4X4 control module sends the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) a message to turn the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

If the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) or transaxle message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0100:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

If the AWD (All-Wheel Drive) status message is missing for greater than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0102:00 and defaults the powertrain malfunction (wrench) warning indicator on.

NOTE: If U0100:00 is set in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) , other symptoms may also be present such as an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or temperature gauge.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) concern

- AWD (All-Wheel Drive) concern

- Transaxle concern

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST AM : THE POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION (WRENCH) MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON (NON-HYBRID)

AM1 CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER OPERATION

- Close all doors and the luggage compartment lid.

- Ignition ON.

- Open the driver door while monitoring the message center displays.

Does the message center display the door ajar message center warning indicator along with the DRIVER DOOR AJAR text?

Yes
GO to AM2.

No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

AM2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC U0100:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BF. Pinpoint Test BF: DTC U0100:00

For DTC U0102:00, GO to Pinpoint Test BH. Pinpoint Test BH: DTC U0102:00

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes

No
GO to AM3.

AM3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE PCM KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded PCM DTCs from the Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
DIAGNOSE all PCM DTCs first. REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.

No
REPAIR all 4x4 module DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
