Steering Column
Removal and Installation
All vehicles
1. Remove the steering column shrouds. For additional information, refer to Steering Column Shroud .
2. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to Steering Wheel .
3. Remove the steering column opening trim panel.
4. Disconnect the following electrical connectors.
- Clockspring
- Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) transceiver
- Ignition switch
- Multifunction switch
- Steering wheel rotation sensor
- Key release interlock actuator (if equipped)
Vehicles with power tilt
5. Disconnect the power tilt motor electrical connector.
Vehicles with column shift
6. Detach the shift lever cable from the steering column and the bracket.
7. Disconnect the overdrive cancel switch and the Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) electrical connectors.
All vehicles
8. Detach the wiring harness retainer from the steering column and position the wiring harness aside.
9. Remove the bolt and detach the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
- Discard the bolt.
- To install, tighten the new bolt to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
10. Remove the 4 nuts and the steering column.
- Discard the nuts.
- To install, tighten the new nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
11. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).
NOTICE: Make sure that the steering column support is flush with the instrument panel before tightening the nuts or damage to the components may occur.
NOTICE: Make sure the electrical wiring harness is routed correctly and secured to the steering column or damage to the wires and/or connectors may occur.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Vehicles with power tilt
12. If a new steering column has been installed, operate the column through the full range of travel using the steering column control switch. This allows the Driver Seat Module (DSM) to learn the position of the new column.
