DESCRIPTION

On some vehicles, the front carpet may have been cut short and installed during production. As a result, the edge of the carpet to the left of the driver's seat may stick out from under the trim (figure 1).

As of May 7, 1991, the edge of the carpet has been lengthened by 16 mm.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Vehicles produced before May 7, 1991 with this condition should be repaired using the following items (figure 2):

Four (4) - 3/4" thick x 7" square pieces of Padding

One (1) - 1/16" thick x 5/8" x 5/8" x 3-7/8" long Plastic Angle Molding

Two (2) - 1/8" diameter Pop Rivets

Two (2) - 5/16" Back-Up Washers

These items are not available through your servicing PDC. They can be purchased through a local hardware store. You may also sublet this repair to an auto upholstery repair shop. See Warranty Information for details.

After the necessary parts have been purchased, vehicles with this condition should be repaired using the following procedures. These procedures are designed to raise the carpet and hold it in place behind the side kick panel.

1. Identify that carpet is cut too short (figure 1).

2. Remove the scuff plate and the side kick panel.

3. Fold back the carpet to gain access to the floorboard area (figure 3).

4. Place the pads on the floorboard under the carpet as shown in figure 4.

NOTE:
Be sure to overlap the pads correctly as illustrated.

5. Place the plastic angle molding next to the OEM molding and drill two (2) 1/8" holes through the plastic angle molding and the vehicle carpet (figure 5).

CAUTION:
When drilling, be sure that the drill bit does not come in contact with the wiring harnesses or the floorboard. Use a drill stop if necessary.

6. Insert the pop rivets through the molding and the vehicle carpet (figure 5).

7. Install (from the back side of the carpet) 5/16" back-up washers on the rivets.

8. While holding the back-up washers on the rivets, pop the rivets into place.

9. Install carpet, side kick panel, and scuff plate to original position.

NOTE:
Make sure the brake and gas pedals maintain the proper clearance.
