AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DISASSEMBLY Continued

50. Remove the center support locknut and cage.

Caution: Do not pry on other wires or damage the connector or case surface.

51. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.
1) Remove the TSS sensor electrical connector from the transmission case (16 pin) electrical connector.
2) Remove the TSS sensor connector wires from wire locator.

Caution: Carefully route the TSS connector and wiring into the transmission through the opening in the case.

52. Remove the TSS sensor.
1) Remove the TSS sensor screw.
2) Remove the TSS sensor.

Caution: Do not overstretch the retaining spring.

53. Remove the transmission case (16 pin) electrical connector retaining spring.

Caution: Do not damage the connector or harness.

54. Carefully push down on the top of the connector until it stops. Depress the tabs and push down on the connector.

55. Push the transmission case (16 pin) electrical connector out of transmission case.

56. Remove the center support snap ring.

Note: When removing the center support, pull evenly around the center support web.

57. Remove the center support.

58. Remove the intermediate brake drum thrust bearing (No. 4).

Note: Tag and identify the intermediate brake drum thrust bearing (No. 4).

59. Remove the intermediate band anchor strut.

Caution: Identify which end of the intermediate band is the anchor side and which is the apply side.

60. Remove the intermediate band.

61. Remove the intermediate band apply strut.

62. Remove the intermediate band actuating lever shaft.

Note: The intermediate band lever shaft is shorter than the front band lever shaft.

63. Remove the intermediate servo actuating lever.

Note: Tag and identify the intermediate servo band lever. The intermediate servo band lever has a letter stamped into its side.

64. Rotate the transmission so the oil pan surface is facing up.

Note: The forward clutch cylinder thrust bearing (No. 5) may come out with the reverse and high clutch drum.

65. Remove the reverse and high clutch drum.

66. Remove the forward clutch cylinder thrust bearing (No. 5); tag and identify.

67. Remove the forward clutch cylinder.

68. Remove the forward ring gear hub thrust bearing (No. 6A).

69. Remove the forward ring gear and forward ring gear hub as an assembly.

70. Remove forward clutch thrust washer (No. 6B) from the forward ring gear hub.

71. Remove the forward planet thrust bearing (No. 7).

Note: Check black oxidized side during removal to ensure correct placement during reassembly. Black oxidized side must be toward planetary assembly. The uncoated side must face up.

72. Remove the forward carrier hub assembly.

73. Remove input shell with the forward sun gear.

74. Remove the low/reverse planetary carrier thrust bearing (No. 8).

Note: Tag and identify the low/reverse planetary carrier thrust bearing (No. 8).

75. Remove the low/reverse planetary retaining snap ring.

76. Remove low/reverse planetary assembly.

77. Remove the low/reverse planetary carrier thrust bearing (No. 9).

Note: Tag and identify the low/reverse planetary carrier thrust bearing (No. 9).

78. Remove the output shaft sleeve.

Caution: Discard the output shaft retaining ring. A new retaining ring must be used for assembly.

79. Remove and discard the output shaft snap ring.

Note: Removing the snap ring releases the output shaft. Hold the output shaft when removing the snap ring.

80. Remove the output shaft ring gear and the output shaft hub.

81. Remove the output shaft thrust bearing (No. 10).

Note: Tag and identify the output shaft hub thrust bearing (No. 10).

82. Remove the reverse brake drum and one-way clutch assembly.

Note: The inner race of the rear one-way clutch is not removable. It is serviced in the case.

83. Remove the reverse band.

84. Remove the output shaft.

Note:
^ The output shaft is model dependent.
^ The 4.0L output shaft does not use lube holes.

85. Remove the park gear.

86. Remove the output shaft thrust washer (No. 11).

Note: Tag and identify the output shaft thrust washer (No. 11).

Caution: To avoid damage, make sure wrench does not strike the manual valve inner lever pin.

87. Remove the manual control valve inner lever nut.

88. Remove the manual control valve inner lever and the parking lever actuating rod.

Caution: Do not damage the case oil pan rail.
