Assembly Note

Assembly Note

Caution: Do not lose parts when cleaning or servicing.

1. Thoroughly clean all parts in solvent and blow dry with moisture free compressed air.

Caution: Do not stone, file, or sand valves. This will remove the anodized finish and may result in further main control or transmission damage.

2. After cleaning the main control valve body, perform the following:
1) Inspect all valve and plug bores for scoring or burrs.
2) Check all fluid passages for obstructions.
3) Inspect all valves and plugs for burrs.
4) Inspect all mating surfaces for burrs or distortion.
5) Inspect all springs for distortion.
6) Check all valves and plugs for free movement in their respective bores.
^ Valves and plugs, when dry, must fall from their own weight into their respective bores.
7) Roll the manual valve on a flat surface to check for a bent condition.
3. Clean and inspect the EPC solenoid screens.

4. Remove and replace all shift solenoid O-rings.

5. Clean and inspect the TCC solenoid.

Caution: Make sure that the screen is properly located.

6. Clean and inspect the EPC limit circuit screen. Install the EPC limit circuit screen.

7. Install the (four) main control valve body check balls.

Caution: The springs and valves are not interchangeable. Damage to transmission may occur.

8. Install the dark color plastic converter relief valve and spring.

9. Install the extension housing lube orifice and the metal silver EPC limit relief valve and spring.
1) Install the extension housing lube orifice.
2) Install the silver metal EPC limit relief valve and spring.

Note: The springs and valves are not interchangeable.

Note:
^ Apply petroleum jelly on the valve body separator plate to hold the main control to case gaskets in place.
^ Use new separator plate main control to case gaskets on installation.

10. Install the main control valve body separator plate and main control to case gasket.
1) Position the main control valve body separator plate to the main control to case gasket and install separator plate to main control valve body.
2) Install, do not tighten, the separator plate screws.

11. Install Valve Body Alignment Pin SSTs 49 UN01 139 and 49 UN01 140 into the main control valve body.
1) Install large Valve Body Alignment Pin SST 49 UN01 140 (0.248 DIA).
2) Install small Valve Body Alignment Pin SST 49 UN01 139 (0.235 DIA).

12. Tighten the separator plate screws.

13. Install new main control to case gasket.

Note:
^ Apply petroleum jelly on the separator plate surface to hold the gaskets in place.
^ Use new separator plate gaskets on installation.

14. Remove the Valve Body Alignment Pin SSTs 49 UN01 139 and 49 UN01 140 from main control valve body.
1) Remove large Valve Body Alignment Pin SST 49 UN01 140.
2) Remove small Valve Body Alignment Pin SST 49 UN01 139.

15. Rotate the main control valve body so the valve body separator plate is facing down.

Caution: All solenoid electrical connectors must face upward on installation.

16. Install the SS2, CCS (4R44E only), SS4 (5R55E only), TCC and EPC solenoids.
1) Install the TCC solenoid.
2) Install the SS2 and CCS or SS4 solenoids.
3) Install the EPC solenoid.

Note:
^ All shift solenoids are interchangeable.
^ If the TCC valve came out during disassembly, use caution when installing the torque converter clutch solenoid.

Caution: The solenoid clamp must be installed in the TCC and EPC solenoid grooves, shift solenoid pockets and the No. 204 plug.

17. Install the solenoid clamp and the solenoid clamp bolt.
1) Position the solenoid clamp on the main control valve body
2) Install the solenoid clamp bolt.

Caution: The shift solenoid electrical terminals must face up on installation.

18. Install the SS1 and the SS3 shift solenoids.

Note: The shift solenoids are interchangeable.

19. Install the solenoid clamp and the solenoid clamp bolt.
1) Position the solenoid clamp on the main control valve body.
2) Install the solenoid clamp bolt.
