ENGINE REMOVAL / INSTALLATIONRemoval
All Vehicles
Caution:
^ If the fuel supply manifold is used as a leverage device, damage may occur to the supply manifold. Care must be taken when working around the fuel supply manifold.
1. Relieve the fuel pressure.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the hood.
4. If the vehicle is equipped with ATC, discharge and recover the A/C system.
5. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
6. Remove the radiator.
7. Disconnect accelerator and cruise control cables.
1. Detach the accelerator and speed control cables from the throttle body.
2. Detach the accelerator and speed control cables from the bracket and position the cables aside.
8. If the vehicle is equipped with A/C, disconnect the A/C high pressure switch electrical connector.
9. If the vehicle is equipped with A/C, remove the bolt and position the A/C hoses aside.
10. Remove the accessory drive belt.
Note:
^ Power steering pump pulley is removed for clarity.
11. Disconnect the high pressure hose from the power steering pump.
Note:
^ The battery is removed for clarity.
12. Disconnect the power steering return hose from the power steering fluid reservoir.
13. Remove the accessory bracket bolts and the bracket, the A/C compressor, if equipped, the power steering pump and the power steering reservoir as an assembly.
14. Disconnect: the generator wiring.
15. Remove the wiring harness retainer and position generator wiring away from engine.
16. Remove the bolt and the engine wiring harness bracket. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
17. Disconnect the engine electrical connector.
18. Remove the engine wiring harness retainer nut.
19. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) electrical connector.
20. Disconnect the PCM electrical ground wire.
21. Disconnect the engine ground wire.
22. Release hose clamp and disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
23. Disconnect the vapor hose.
24. Disconnect the vapor hose and pin-type retainer Remove the vapor hose.
25. Remove the crankcase breather hose and disconnect the vacuum hose.
Note:
^ Heater hose will be removed with engine.
26. Release hose clamp and disconnect hose.
27. Disconnect the two heater water hoses.
28. Disconnect the fuel line.
29. Remove the starter motor.
Vehicles with an automatic transmission
30. Remove the transmission level indicator tube nut.
31. Disconnect the transmission control and input shaft electrical connectors. Remove the wiring harness pin-type retainer.
32. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor and digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor electrical connectors.
33. Remove the bolt and position the transmission cooling tube bracket aside.
34. Remove the torque converter nuts.
Vehicles with an manual transmission
35. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.
36. Disconnect the following:
1. Disconnect the OSS sensor electrical connector.
2. Detach the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector from the bracket.
All Vehicles
37. Drain the engine oil.
38. Install the oil drain plug.
39. Remove the oil filter
40. Disconnect the RH HO2S electrical connector.
41. Disconnect the LH HO2S electrical connector.
42. Disconnect the LH HO2S electrical connector
43. Disconnect the RH HO2S electrical connector.
44. Remove the Y-pipe-to-catalytic converter nuts, bolts and gasket:.
45. Remove the bolts.
46. Remove the bolts and the exhaust pipe.
47. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connector located on the frame.
48. Release transmission/transfer case portion of the wiring harness from any routing clips or pushpins.
49. Route transmission transfer case portion of the wiring harness to top of engine.
50. If equipped with A/C, remove the A/C tube bracket nut and position it aside.
Note:
^ Automatic transmission shown, manual transmission similar.
51. Remove the eight bolts.
52. Remove the RH engine insulator nuts.
53. Remove the LH engine insulator nuts.
Note:
^ The lifting eyes should be installed on the exhaust manifold studs for number three and number four cylinders.
54. Install the lifting eyes.
55. Install the spreader bar to the rifling eyes.
56. Attach a floor crane to the spreader bar and remove the engine.
