Fuel Injector: Testing and Inspection

1. Using a mechanic's stethoscope, check operation of injectors from idle through acceleration. If all injectors do not operate, proceed to step 2.
2. Check fuel injection system main fuse, replacing as necessary.
3. Turn ignition switch ``On'' and ``Off'' and ensure main relay clicks.
4. If clicking is not heard at main relay when ignition switch is turned ``On,'' check for 12 volts at main relay connector No. 1 terminal (BW) wire.
5. Check injectors for fuel leakage as follows:
a. Remove surge tank.
b. Loosen distribution pipe attaching bolts.
c. Attach injectors to distribution pipe with wire. Attach injectors firmly to distribution pipe so that no movement of injectors is possible.
d. Turn ignition ``On,'' connect both terminals of fuel pump check connector with jumper wire, and ensure fuel does not leak from injector nozzles. A slight amount of fuel leakage after 5 minutes is acceptable.
6. Test injector volume as follows:
a. Attach injectors to distribution pipe as described in step 5.
b. Connect vinyl hose, at least 6.6 ft. in length, to injector.
c. Connect injector checker 49 9200 040 or equivalent to injector.
d. Turn ignition switch ``On'' and connect both terminals of fuel pump check connector with jumper wire.
e. Apply battery voltage to injector checker and measure injector volume with graduated cylinder. Volume should be 1.95-2.5 cubic inches on 1986 models, or 4-5 cubic inches on 1987 models, within a 15 second interval.
