The owner's manual for the 1986 Mazda 323 contains instructions for installing a child restraint system using the seat belt. The present instruction in the owner's manual is applicable to the 3-door Hatchback model which is equipped with a single-retractor belt system, but additional instructions have been found to be required for the 4-door and 5-door models which are equipped with separate retractors for lap and shoulder belts.

The attached letter will be sent to the subject owners of the 1986 323's around April 25, 1986 to let them know these additional instructions and request them to replace the relevant page in their owner's manual.

Should you have any questions about this matter, please feel free to contact your District Service Manager.

Your cooperation in this program will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, Mazda Motors of America (Central) Inc.

Dear Mazda Owner

According to our records, you are the proud owner of a 1986 Mazda 323 4-door sedan or a 5-door hatchback.

The owner's manual for the 1986 Mazda 323 contains instructions for installing a child restraint system on the front seat using the lap belt. These instructions recommend the use of a locking clip to prevent the looseness of the lap belt from becoming loose.

Starting with the 1986 models, we have adopted a dual-retractor seat belt system for the 323 4-door and 5-door models, and now wish to provide additional instructions regarding the use of the locking clip for such models. Accordingly we are enclosing a copy of the revised page of the owner's manual for your reading and use.

REPLACEMENT PAGE:

Please attach this copy which replaces page 2-13 of your owner's manual as shown in the following figure.

NOTE:
Some of the owner's manuals may have already been revised at the factory, therefore, please confirm the contents of your owner's manual on page 2-13. If the "Installation on Front Seat" in your owner's manual is identical with that in the revised sheet enclosed the replacement is not required. Please discard the replacement.

Please accept our apology for causing any inconvenience.

Sincerely, Mazda

Installation on Front Seat:
To install a child restraint system in the front of your vehicle a seat belt locking clip is required. Secure the child restraint with the lap belt, as shown in the example illustration. To prevent looseness of the lap belt, use a genuine Mazda locking clip (pad number FA55 57 999, available from your Mazda dealer) or one of equivalent dimensions and strength.

CHILD RESTRAINT SEAT SYSTEM:

Type A (For 3-door models)
1. Slide the seat to the rearmost position.
2. Fasten the lap and shoulder belts over the child restraint system.
3. Tighten the lap belt by pulling on the shoulder belt.
4. To Install the locking clip, insert the lap and shoulder webbing through the recesses of the locking clip near the seat belt latch.
5. If necessary, slide the seat forward to remove slack.
6. After securing the belt by use of the locking clip, tuck the shoulder portion of the belt between the child restraint system and the seatback. (REPLACEMENT PAGE 2-13)

LAP BELT ASSEMBLY:

Type B (For 4-door and 5-door models)
1. Slide the seat to the rearmost position.
2. Fasten the lap and shoulder belts over the child restraint system, 3. Pull the lap belt out fully.
4. Tie up the slack of the lap belt using the locking clip near the seatbelt latch as shown in the figure.
5. After you have put up the belt, pull on it in the directions marked "A" in the figure to make sure that it does not slip.
6. If necessary, slide the seat forward to remove slack.
7. After securing the belt by use of the locking clip, tuck the shoulder portion of the belt between the child restraint system and the seatback. NOTE When your child restraint system is not installed, the locking clip should be stored in the glove box to prevent it from being lost.

Children Once a child has outgrown the child restraint system, he should use the belts which are provided in the vehicle. If seated in the front, he
should be belted at both the lap and the shoulder. If he is so small that the shoulder belt binds his neck or face, he should be seated in the rear of the vehicle and belted at the lap. If an infant is not able to sit up or if a proper child restraint is not accessible, he should be put in a well-protected baby carrier which is placed on the rear seat and secured with a seat belt. A child should never be permitted to stand or kneel on the seat of any moving vehicle.

Restraint of Pregnant Women:
Pregnant women should use seat belts according to specific recommendations by their doctors. The lap belt should be worn as snugly and as LOW as possible.

PROPER USE AND CARE OF SEAT BELT SYSTEM To gain maximum effectiveness from the seat belt system, follow these suggestions.
^ Use the belts at all times - even on short trips.
^ Never use the same belt for more than one person at a time.
^ Avoid wearing twisted belts.
^ Keep sharp edges and damaging objects away from belts and other parts of the restraint system.
^ Periodically inspect belt webbing, buckles, anchors, and all other parts for signs of wear, damage, or weakness. Replace questionable parts immediately.
^ To clean the webbing, wash it with a mild soap or mild detergent. Do not use such cleaners as carbon tetrachloride or naphth.

^ Bleaching or redyeing is not recommended. No modifications or additions should be made by the user.
^ After wearing a seatbelt, make sure it is not caught on adjusting levers or elsewhere.
